J. Flowers Obituary

J. Sidney Flowers - Hinesville -J. Sidney Flowers of Hinesville died Monday, August 21, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah after a long illness. Sidney was born in Liberty County on December 22, 1931 to Annie Lou Jones Flowers and Arlie Orr Flowers. He is predeceased by his parents and seven of his eight siblings. Sidney married Nancy Jeanne McClellan of Lakeland, FL in September 1956 and his death comes just days before their 50th wedding anniversary. Sidney attended Liberty County schools and graduated from Bradwell Institute in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army for two years then attended Mercer University and Mercer Law School in Macon, earning a Bachelor of Science and a Juris Doctorate in 1961. While at Mercer he was a member of the Law Review. In 1963 he moved with his family to begin his law practice in his hometown of Hinesville. Sidney continued his practice until the time of his death, also serving for 32 years as Solicitor of the State Court of Liberty County. Hewas attorney for the City of Midway for more than 20 years. Sidney loved his community and served it well and generously, volunteering in many capacities including as Chairman of the Liberty County Cancer Society and a member of the Lions Club. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hinesville where he served as an elder and was named Elder Emeritus, a member of the American Legion and Forty and Eight, a member of the Hinesville Masonic Lodge #271, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and the Georgia Bar Association and the Atlantic Judicial Bar Association. He was an honorary member of the Georgia Sheriff's Association supporting Boys Ranch and was a contributor to many other charitable organizations. Sidney was active in local and state politics, having run for mayor and the state senate, and was instrumental in forming the Liberty County Republican Party. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Nan Flowers of Hinesville; two daughters, Kay Flowers Johnson and her husband Dan Johnson of Atlanta; Darcy Flowers of Hartwell, GA; two granddaughters, Katherine Eleanor Johnson and Eva Campbell Johnson of Atlanta; one brother, J. W. (Dub) Flowers (Carleen) of Albany, GA; brother-in-law Ed Hahn of Pittsburgh, PA; sister-in-law Pauline Flowers of Trenton, GA; and several nieces and nephews and their families. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 25, 2006 at First Baptist Church in Hinesville with Dr. Tom Mueller, Dr. James Collins, and Rev. Alan Flowers officiating. Burial will be in the Flemington Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations be made in Sidney's name to the First Presbyterian Church of Hinesville, 320 East Washington Avenue, Hinesville, GA 31313.
