Linda Morris Obituary

Linda Fisk Morris
Savannah, Georgia
Linda Fisk Morris passed away on May 27 at her home with her husband Wilson by her side.
Linda's survivors include daughter Cassie Carroll of Seattle and granddaughters Averell and Caroline; Caroline Easterling of Rockville, MD and granddaughters Amanda and Kimberly; and daughter Mary Dowdle of Hawaii. Linda's first husband, Robert Fisk, deceased, was a public defender in Washington, DC for many years. He was the grandson of Governor and Ambassador Averell Harriman.
Linda was a graduate of Stanford and received a masters degree from the University of Southern California while Robert was serving in Vietnam. She grew up in Redlands, CA.
Linda was born at Luke Army Air Field, Arizona on September 24, 1944, where her father David was a fighter pilot instructor. He was a timberman and of a pioneering Maine family. Her grandfather, a Yale Forestry graduate, was one of the early men in the National Forest Service and was the supervisor of the Plumas National Forest in the Sierra Mountains for decades. His father was a captain in the 8th Maine Regiment, the "Lumbermen of Penobscot." He participated in the capture of Hilton Head and Fort Pulaski and was wounded three time at Cold Harbor and Petersburg during Ge. Grant's Virginia campaign.
Linda's mother Maribel Ricker attended the Hockaday School in Dallas and the University of Texas. Linda's grandfather Rupert Ricker was instrumental in obtaining vast mineral rights for the University of Texas and bringing in Santa Rita No. 1, the first producing oil well in the Permian Basin.
In Washington, Linda was president of the Washington Tennis Foundation and board chair of the Hospital for Sick Children. The WTF held a major ATP tournament and Linda started as a driver for players including John McEnroe. She hosted the Amritraj brothers from India at her home where she had a private court. Linda was a fine tennis player and for many years an active runner and golfer.
As a Stanford student, Linda had chaired the university's "Stanford in Washington" program and she later worked for Congressman Sam Farr from Monterey on Indian affairs and issues like chumming for great white sharks while scuba divers were sharing the water. At that time, Wilson was a senior advisor to the Speaker of the House.
Linda and Wilson moved to Savannah in 1997. They built a home modeled on a pre-Revolutionary War structure on the site of a moonshine still. Here, Linda was a board member and collections committee chair at the Telfair Museums. She was active in many environmental organizations and took great pride in having campaigned for President Obama and attending his first inaugural. The Savannah Music Festival was a favored organization. Avid readers, they were part of a group that read all of Shakespeare and a book club that read only winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Linda and Wilson often loaded the station wagon with tent and gear and camped in Big Bend, the Grand Canyon, Zion and other parks. Travels took them to Antarctica, Alaska, Churchill, Egypt, Kenya, Galapagos, Peru, Costa Rica, the Amazon and most of Europe. Always with binoculars to look for birds.
Services will be at a later date in San Angelo, TX where Linda will rest beside her mother and grandmother. Memorial will be welcomed at the Telfair Museums and any local environmental organization.

My sincere condolences to Wilson and the family. Linda was like a ray of sunshine whenever you saw her. Her smile was always bright, warm and welcoming. Linda S’ 61 was a cherished member of the Princeton Alumni community. She will be missed.
