Rick Fleming Obituary

Rick Fleming - SAVANNAH - On March 15, the wondrous life of Rick Fleming came to a peaceful end in Savannah, Georgia. He spent his final days surrounded by loved ones hoping for a miracle, but all there knew that the greatest miracle was that such a man had ever walked the earth, and that they had been fortunate to be a part of his incredible journey. Called a mentor by some, a father by others, a friend by all, and a loving companion by Savannah native Vicky Taylor, Rick leaves behind innumerable lives forever changed by his love and grace. Rick was born in Madison, Wisconsin on January 14, 1953, but set off on his own as soon as legally possible to explore the outside world. He spent a few years in Colorado as a self professed ski bum, before moving to Austin where he loafed about until a friend did what he described as the biggest favor of his life: he cut him off. Facing the prospect of sleeping on the streets, he fixed the friend's leaky roof to earn his keep and, believing he had nothing to lose, set out to apply this know-how toward others' roofs. Over the next few years, he transformed that initial act of desperation into a company known for the watertight relationships he built with his clients. When an economic downturn forced most of his competitors into bankruptcy, Rick chose personal poverty rather than compromising the trust of his creditors. When the crises relented, Rick and his company, Texas Fifth Wall Systems, emerged as the most trusted commercial roofing contractor in the state, eventually growing into one of the largest as well. Rick preferred personal liberty to wealth, but knew that true independence required a certain amount of both. When he found partners far more knowledgeable in business than him, he realized that getting out of their way meant more freedom and security for him. And so, at the ripe age of 40, Rick retired and set off to pursue his true calling: helping others. Rick was a generous man quick to share his wealth with others. But more importantly, he was an enabler in the very best sense of the word because he delighted in helping others discover their resourcefulness. He believed that if he gave someone a fish, he could feed them for a day but by teaching them to fish he would have a fishing buddy for life, and a chance to discover why they were hungry in the first place. No fan of empty metaphors, Rick took a position with the Scott Fly Rod Company, though it was hard to say whether his official title was best sales representative or their best customer. Buying hundreds of their their rods, he packed them in an RV and travelled the country spreading the gospel with missionary zeal. In those quiet moments on the water with new friends, Rick found that the greatest thrill of all came from learning about the problems of others and helping them to find their own solutions. Although landing a hundred pound tarpon on a fly rod would always be a very close second. For the remainder of his life, Rick served as a mentor and counsellor to others. Though he supported established methods of therapy, including the Adult Children of Alcoholics network and various faith-based outreach programs, his greatest joy came from using the hobbies he loved to reach people. He opened his woodworking shop to local high school students and taught those struggling with grief and loss how to sail on the catamaran he had come to call home. Most recently, he offered his encouragement, experience and means toward the realization of the KeyBar company, which is now thriving in Savannah thanks to his efforts. Survived by family and friends too numerous to count, the memories of Rick will live on in those whose lives he touched, and he will doubtlessly continue to make the world a better place through the lessons he has imparted. Celebrations of the life of Rick Fleming will be held in Savannah, Georgia on Sunday, March 20, and in Georgetown, Texas on Saturday, March 26. I met Rick while attending the University of Texas in 1975. He was my first true love. His beloved dog Rusty helped bring us together. Back in those days he was a better friend than boyfriend so our relationship did not survive. But I will always remember Rick as a person who took care of everyone lucky enough to be his friend. I don't think he ever really knew how ingenious he was. Without any advanced education beyond high school he started and grew a business that still thrives today. I remember sitting on his sofa helping him select a logo for his 5th Wall business cards. I last spoke to Rick when we were in our 50's. He was as warm and caring as ever. I am just learning today in 2025 that he has passed. I am devastated that his life was cut short but thrilled to learn he continued to have genuine and loving friends until the end and beyond. I will always cherish your memory Rick. RIP.

Here I am again, Rick. Wishing you were still here, but also knowing that you are. I get your random sailing emails at the perfect times, and find those amazing pennies that are so worn they are silver and smooth. Not to mention the hundreds and yellow butterflies that feed my soul. We love you so much , Rick. You were more than an inspiration to us all. Until we meet again❤❤

What a pleasure it was to have had the honor of knowing Rick. I'm so glad Banks and I spent that day upon the Graceful Storm with you all. Although, we never left the dock- Rick taught Banks how to be a first mate- until Banks passed out that is. Banks and Papa Rick had a precious bond from the very beginning. I admired Rick's dedication to Mike and Jess and KeyBar. We exchanged several messages and talked on the phone a few times as KeyBar became more and more successful. He was SO proud of those two. How lucky you ALL were to have him. My memories of Rick won't wash away with the tide. Happy Sailing Captain!

Sorry to hear about Rick's passing.
I moved to Austin in 1976 and starting working for Rick soon after. He was just starting Fifth Wall. At times it was just the 2 of us. He was really one of the "give you shirt off his back" guys. I remember him driving with me, in his car, 300 miles to snowy west Texas to help me tow a car back to Austin. Although we didn't keep in touch, I thought about him often over these last 40 years. Rest in peace Rick, Larry Rogers

So sorry for everyones loss. I want to share 2 stories. I was responding to a motorcycle ad in 1976 or 77 in Austin, that he had for sale. When exchanging addresses over phone, we realized that I lived directly above him. He said," Stomp Your foot". we both ran out side laughing. It turned out we were both roofers, I was a residential roofer and he was a Commercial roofer. During winter he loaned me Bear Skin gloves to wear on that Honda which was originally his Dad's 1976 Honda CB 360 T, . I gave the gloves back in Spring. One weekend (OU-Texas weekend) we decided to go fishing down the Colorado River below Town Lake in his small Jon Boat. We ran upon a log just under surface of water and it flipped us over in about 4-5' of water. We were scrambling for batteries, trolling motor, rods reels, lures for a while. It was nearing darkness and we decided to set up camp and spend the night. We were arguing over a teepee fire or log cabin-we only had few dry matches- and discovered we were both Eagle Boy Scouts. Very funny. I did not hang out with him a lot and moved to dallas in 82. Last year I was working in Austin for 7 months and had his name written down on Notes, trying to remind myself to call him. I Wish I had, but I guess he was in Georgia.
Rick may you Rest in Peace, Brad Carver

Papa Rick- You will forever be in our hearts-- Your unwavering love and compassion for others, your kindness and generosity, your knowledge and motivation, your humor and wit and overall goodness in everything you did was a huge inspiration to me and my family. Your legacy will live on in all that we do. Because of you we are better. I thank God every day that he brought you in to our lives and I know that you are free now, sailing with the tide. Rest well Papa Rick-- We can't wait to see you again.

Vicky and Rick's family, I am so sorry for your loss. Rick and I played drums together in Band in High School and it was the highlight of our 40th Class Reunion to reconnect with Rick. I was really looking forward to seeing Rick this year at the 40th - he was one of my classmates that never changed. I hope Rick runs into my son Marc up there - they can play Wipeout together!

Rick was a special friend and neighbor, and we will miss him dearly. He left Georgetown a couple of years ago to check on his boat that had been struck by lightning. He told me he would be back in a couple of weeks. Since I have known Rick for more than 20 years, I knew better. That was the last time I saw him, but was awaiting his return...... Such a great soul.
