Dear Nanci & Rachel,
Bill and I met at Fort Benning in 1985. He and I were competing Heavy Mortar Platoon Leaders. Bill was with the 3-7 Cavalry and I with 2/69 Armor. As competitors, we had a furious rivalry to lead the best indirect fire platoon in the 197th Infantry Brigade. Our mutual respect was evident, as I applauded Bill and his guys when they beat us for top honors the first year. Our final year together as battling lieutenants, My platoon had learned and grown, and final beat him and the 3-7 Cav. I've never met such a worthy competitor and leader in all my 29 years of service. I raise my Right Hand/Arm in salute to a dedicated man and Army leader, who I always respected as an important and worthy competitor and fellow Army officer. May God bless you, Nanci and Rachel, and please remember that COL(Ret) Jim Kester of Fairport, knew, respected and loved your husband and dad - the outstanding COL Bill Wood.
Love and Blessings Always,

April 29th 2011, I graduated Airborne School and pinned on the rank of MSG. My instructor was a former 2/39 Inf Regt Bn DS, my mentor and Battle who pinned my Airborne Wings and MSG rank was a former 2/39 Inf Regt Bn DS. April 29th was destiny a day meant to be and I dedicated my Jump Wings to COL W. W. Wood. He was truly an inspiration and a great Soldier. We talked often and laughed more. I am honored to have known him and served along side him. He keeps me motivated daily!

Ma'am, I was in south Bagdad with your husband when he passed. I think of him often and when I am down and out I google his name and read his obituary. We were attached to 1 184 when he took over command and he and I clicked right away. I respected him the short time I knew him because of the respect he showed me. I will always remember the COL.

To Nanci and Rachel
I pray that you are doing very well. I think of you both very often. I think of COL Wood and the times we had at 2/39 (AAA-O). I remember speaking at a prayer breakfast and when it was over, he looked at me and said, "Chaplain, were you talking to me?" I told him no. He then smiled and walked away. When I think of him and our time together at 2/39, I miss him. However, I am sure I will see him again in heaven, when I get there. Again, I pray God's blessing on you both. Be Blessed.

He was my commanding officer at basic training. With an immaculate uniform, Col. Woods emphatically emphasized the importance of not becoming complacent, and ensured that we (SIT) understood that we would be traveling down-range at some point, and that our survival depended on our readiness, and constant vigilance. "Stay alert, stay alive!" I am sad to just learn of his death, especially seeing as we were both in/around Baghdad at the same. My heart goes out to his family, and I'd like them to know that, without a doubt, he is a major reason that I was able to come home from my tour. I'll never forget shaking his hand at my graduation, and I wish I still had the coin he gave me. Watching him chew our captain out for not teaching us a moto at the conclusion of Victory Forge was one of the funniest events I've ever witnessed. Damn...I'll say a prayer. 2/39th Salutes You, Col. William Woods!

After four years you’re still on my mind. If it wasn’t for you sir, and what you taught me in the sand box, I wouldn’t be being thanked for what I have done. Because of you and men like you, I’m able to serve my state now. I’ll always remember what you always said before every mission, “Keep your head on a swivel”, words I live by every min while I'm on patrol. I talk to you and my other fallen friends every night; I know you’re all with me. Thank you for all you have taught me, you will always be in my heart.

It has been well over3 years now. Col.Woods was my brothers superior. My brother was Cpt. Hill who two days later gave his life for our country. He was truly disturbed and definately sorroful at the passing of Col. Woods and Cpt McKinnon. I spoke to my brother the same day that the Col and the Cpt were KIA. He was very very down, stating that the two men will definately be missed. He enjoyed woking with the two with their duties.
His Company is back in the middle east this year on their second tour as Cal. National Guard, and I have become very good friends with a few of his soldiers and it worrys me daily that they could end up giving their lives, but not for the freedom of this great country.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know William, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

“It took a Hero”
By Sgt Jeff Burney
2BCT 3ID
It takes strength of character and drive
Love unending and the devotion to survive
The will to embrace instead of disregard
Power to overcome when it seems too hard
I guess that’s why it takes a hero
To make us all see
That’s why it takes a hero
To make us all believe
When that bugle calls
For sacrificing all
We remember
It took a hero
It takes compassion to lend a hand
To persevere and to take a stand
Direction when all is lost
Undaunted to pay the cost
I guess that’s why it takes a hero
To make us all see
That’s why it takes a hero
To make us all believe
When that bugle calls
For sacrificing all
We remember
It took a hero

Colonel Wood touched thousands of lives throughout his own. I was one of those lives, and I am ever grateful and will never forget the impact of his "hard and fair" leadership. His selfless devotion to his country, his family, and his Soldiers were evident in all he did . . . "What have you done for your country today?" . . . "Why are you still here? I'm going home to my family and you need to do the same, Mike."
Nanci and Rachel, thank you for sharing your husband and father with the rest of us. I cannot properly express in words how grateful I am for your sacrifice to our nation.

Mrs. and Ms Wood,
Please accept my sincere condolences about your loss. COL William Wood was a great man who was greatly respected and admired by all of the Soldiers he commanded. There has been no finer man to serve as commander in the US Army.
In 1989 COL Wood (then CPT Wood) was my first company commander in Baumholder, FRG. I served in both his commands C co and HHC 3/12 INF. COL Wood has always been my conscious when making a choice concerning my Soldiers. By his example he taught me to always take care of Soldiers, make a choice based on facts for the good of the Army and stand up for what you believe in. Then CPT Wood made a huge impression on me. He was the first to promote me, first to pin a medal on me, first to send me to military schools and when it was time for my daughter to be born he came to me and asked when I needed to fly home on leave to be with my wife. As I arrived back to duty after her birth he was also the first to congratulate me. When COL (then CPT Wood) became commander of HHC 3/12 INF, he took me with him to be his driver. It was during that time that I decided to stay in the Military. COL Wood was a mentor, friend and teacher. Though I have not seen him since 1992 I always ask myself when faced with a tough choice “What would Wild Bill do?” May God bless his soul, his family and the United States of America.

I served with Col Wood when he was a First Lieutenant assigned to 3rd BN 7th INF (Cottonbalers) at Fort Benning. He had just successfully completed an assignment as a Platoon Leader and had been assigned to the Battalion S3 where I was the S3 NCOIC. AAA-O Sir!!
I served under Col Wood in 2/39 INF REGT (Ft Jackson, SC), a good man and officer that will be truly missed. Even as the Commander of a Basic Training Battalion he was getting dirty and leading soldiers.
Once when we were first instructing IMT (Individual Movement Techniques) and I had a young PVT who just wasn't quite grasping the proper technique. While observing training COL Wood, after I was ready to pull me hair out in attempt to correct this young soldier ... COL Wood stop the soldier, took his weapon, and got in the dirt to demonstrate the proper technique. The soldier still with two "left" feet still didn't get it right but new his leadership cared, and began to understand the importance of the lesson.
We extend our Deepest Condolences to Nancy, Rachel and the Wood Family, from the Arnold Family (Rebecca, Elizabeth, Brittney, Sara, and Victoria). Our prayers are with you.

To all of the Wood family, I can't imagine how you feel. You have my greatest sympathy.
There are very few people in this world that I consider my friend for life, and Bill was one of him. We had a great time in middle school, high school, Gulf Coast, and at FSU. Bill helped me get my first job at Winn-Dixie and we spend many fun times together at work and doing things together afterward. At FSU I was pretty much socially inept. Bill introduced me to his fraternity, the Sig Eps, and helped me adjust to college life.
Bill and I did not keep up over the years, but we will always be great friends. At our Boy Scout meeting last Tuesday night I emphasized to the Scouts how important it was to find good friends in life. With tears in my eyes I told them that I had lost one of my few friends.
I will always remember Bill as a great friend with an infectious smile.

Col. Wood and I served together twenty years ago. We both attended and graduated from Infantry Officer Basic Course 5-84 in September 1984. We were then posted to the same infantry battalion- 3/7 Infantry (Cottonbalers), 197th Inf Brigade (Mech) (Sep) where we served as Platoon Leaders. Bill spoke candidly in those days of his great love of country, Florida State Football (I graduated from UF, the cross-state rivals) and our mutual home state of Florida. We are so sorry to hear of your loss of a son, husband and father. Please accept the sincerest expression of our deepest sympathies.

Dear Lord,
look down upon this country as we share in the lost of another fallen solider. May you send healing to deal with the painful realization that there is a price to pay for freedom. This husband, father, son, grandson, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend give everything he had for freedom.
