Dear Mrs. Flynn,
I happened to be thinking the other day about you and how instrumental, literally, you were in helping me put on "Godspell" at Penn State-Schuylkill back in 2001, and all of our karaoke exploits, and decided to look you up. I fell upon this and my heart broke.
Mr. Flynn was one of the nicest guys I'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Never ashamed of pointing out his Notre Dame football championships, despite the fact he was in Penn State country. He loved pointing himself out in the team pictures whenever I was at your house. And I know he was a legend in Pottsville. He was a great guy and I'm sorry to hear he is gone.
I hope you and your family are well. Thank you for all you did for me. You are always in my thoughts.
Love,

Dear Mrs. Flynn & Family:
Unfortunately, I just found out of Coach Flynn's passing by accident and even though I am quite late with my condolences I felt that I should do so now. I played football for Coach back @ Cathedral High School/El Paso, Texas in 1955. Back then my Dad would come to practice and chat with Coach during and after our scrimmages. He too admired Coach and made it clear to me I should obey Coach to the letter of the law! He loved Coach's toughness and the way he ran our practices. Through another Notre Dame grad whom I worked with I was able to re-connect with Coach a few years ago. It was a wonderful experience to chat with him from time to time about those days gone by! As others have reflected in this Guest Book of what an incredible impact he had on their lives, I too was influenced very strongly in my life by him....next to my own father Coach was at the top of the list of male adults who's impacted me immensely. I had the opportunity to tell him that in one of our conversations and it has given me some "peace of mind" having been able to do that since learning of his passing. I am 76 years old and all these years gone by every football season Coach would jump into my mind and I would call him to Chat about Notre Dame and the Eagles. A few years ago due to family medical issues and time constraints I lost contact with Coach; however, he was again was on my mind each football season. He was an incredibly devoted Catholic, and to his family, and dedicated gentleman who will be on mind each football season til the day I pass. God Bless you, and the entire Flynn family.....Fondly, Vince Vasil

To the entire Flynn family my
heartfelt condolences on Coach Flynn's passing. I have so many memories having grown up just a touchdown pass up the street from the entire Flynn family. My Uncle Ed always says Coach Flynn was the one person who probably had the most profound influence on him of anyone in his life. Coach Flynn was the one coach that he learned more from than any other coach he ever played for and that he would not have made it as far as he did playing the game and most likely in life without Coach Flynn's knowledge, teachings and influence.
God Bless the entire Flynn family and my deepest gratitude for all they have
done for me and my family as well. Rest in Peace Coach Flynn, Thank you.

Marie and family I am sincerely sorry for your loss but I will keep with me the memories having the privilege of covering games in which Bill coached and of the time I spent interviewing him and writing about his teams. He was a special man. The kind of person most people should try to emulate. Again, sorry for your loss and I will pray for him and you.

Mrs Flynn and family, I can only echo what so many people have already written about Coach. I had the the great privilege to play for him for my senior season at PHS. I only wish I could have played for him my entire high school career. He was very special to me and provided great guidance to a great many of Pottsville young men. He will be missed by all who came in contact with him.

Coach Bill Flynn arrived at Chicago's Brother Rice High School in 1963, my freshman year. Brother Rice was a relatively new school then, having graduated only four classes. Among its challenges were to become competitive in the Chicago Catholic League, playing against other schools with origins and competitive histories dating to the early 1900's.
The era preceded the present State High School Championship system but the City of Chicago had its own Championship, the Prep Bowl, pitting the Public League Champion against the Catholic league Champion and played in Soldier's Field.
By Coach Flynn's third season Brother Rice qualified for the Catholic League playoff. In his fourth (final) season Brother Rice won its first Catholic League South Championship and advanced to the Catholic League Championship, also played at Soldier's Field against the North side champion.
Shortly after the recent dedication of the Pottsville Stadium Press Box to Coach Flynn a former Brother Rice player came upon the Republican Herald news column and a YouTube video of the event. Word of his illness quickly circulated among Brother Rice Nation. The Herald Column and subsequent Guest Book entries parallel the feelings and memories of those who knew Coach Flynn at Brother Rice almost forty years ago. There exists at Brother Rice a special kinship among those who played for Coach Flynn, for one year or four, and this kinship extends to those who knew him only as a classroom teacher or from other interactions.
Someone wrote we meet two or three personalities like Coach Flynn in a lifetime. I'm trying to remember who the other one or two are. We all know and realize we were graced to have this unique individual cross the paths of our lives. Certainly our football successes were fully attributed to him, and many of us also connect later life achievements to have foundation with time spent under Coach Flynn's influence.
Rest In Peace, Coach Flynn. Though long gone from Chicago your memory lives on forever among those you touched here.

To Mrs. Flynn and family, I am deeply saddened by your great loss. I know that now your heart is heavy but one day when you read all of the plaudits of humble praises by the students, athletes and friends who knew Mr. Flynn you will certainly feel the greatness of his presence and how empty so many people's lives would have been without him. I had two amazing teachers in my life who have left imprints on my mind, heart and soul for a lifetime – one teacher was in primary school at St. Stephen's in Port Carbon: Sister Sacred Heart. Another was in High School and that was Coach Bill Flynn. I always felt that they were special when I was younger but as I aged I knew that I was very blessed that God placed them both in my life. At this time, as I reflected on Mr. Flynn's place in my life and the richness which he brought, I also reflected on that of Sister Sacred Hearts'. I could not help but think that there burns a truer light of God in them! They also demonstrated actions that lived out the meaning of the quote in the Little Prince - “Here is my secret. It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” Mr. Flynn I know that you are enjoying eternal life in the arms of God in Heaven and that your sweet, precious soul rest is resting in peace. Thank you for all that you gave me and thank you Mrs. Flynn and your children for your willingness to share this great man with so many people. Sincerely, Carol A. Keating-Reichwein

After reading Mr. Neyer's post, I would like to add one more memory about the Coach. When we found out Coach Flynn was leaving Brother Rice to return to Pottsville we passed the hat for a good bye gift. We collected about $300. Actually a years tuition at Rice back then. We knew the Coach had a ton of kids and thought let's just give him the money. Well when the time came for our sad good bye meeting, Coach was embarrassed to take the money. Then a huge smile came across his face and he said now I can buy Louie Russell a head stone. Louie had left Brother Rice the year before and tragically lost his life. Coach had recruited Louie to Rice and at the time Louie was our only black player. This is just the way coach lived his life. Leading by example doing the right thing.

My deepest sympathies to Mrs. Flynn and family for the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. I played for Coach Flynn and had him as an algebra teacher at PAHS in the 60's. It took me a few years after HS to realize his ultimate lessons were: learn from your mistakes but never accept failure and most successes/wins are the result of hard work. He was tough both on the field and in the classroom, and especially so with the lineman on the practice field. My most vivid memory of Coach Flynn is from his going away reception when he left PHS for Chicago at the end of my junior year, at which the guys he was toughest on cried the most and he shook every one of our hands individually and said something positive and encouraging to each of us. RIP Coach/Mr. Flynn knowing you touched many lives and taught all of us alot more than football and math.

To the Flynn family,
As like many who was influenced by Coach, I was saddened to hear of his passing. That sadness soon turned to a smile when I began recalling so many special memories. I can say with pride that I am the person I am today because of Coach's influence. His faith in his players and his unyielding and firm guidance both on the field and in classroom left a an everlasting impression. Thank you Flynn family for sharing your Husband and Father with so many. I am positive that the sharing came with many sacrifices. Please know that your sacrifices allowed him to mold and shape generations of men and women.
God Bless you all and God Bless Coach!

Everybody has one teacher in their years of school who makes an impact on their lives and they remember as "special". Mr. Flynn was that teacher for me. He always started geometry class with a joke, and always looked at me to see if I was laughing -- of course I was because he told the best jokes! He was more than a teacher to me, he was a friend. He was a role model and a wonderful person. Those of us who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him in whatever capacity are better people for having known him. Rest in peace Mr. Flynn -- you will be missed!

To the Flynn Family:
It has been said that an educator is like a candle ... imparting light into the dark abyss of man's ignorance. Yet in lighting the way, that candle is itself consumed. Mr. Flynn's light touched so many lives during his years at Pottsville Area High School. I had the privilege of being a student in his Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II classes. God bless him, he was fair, but as tough as nails. We (his students) were quite serious when we stated "There was a right way to do Algebra, a wrong way and "The Flynn Way" and, by God, you'd better do it "The Flynn Way!" Everyone who emerged from his classes came away with a greater understanding of and an appreciation for mathematics.
Thank you, God, for blessing the students, faculty and administration of PAHS (as well as the community) with Mr. William J. Flynn. We shall be eternally grateful and far richer for having known him. Thank you, Mrs. Flynn and Family, for sharing him with us. He will live on in all of our hearts.

I had the pleasure of having Coach Flynn as a teacher at Brother Rice H.S. in Chicago in 1966. He came to the Catholic League and in 4 short years put Rice on top and allowing us to be proud to be a RICE MAN. He had a presence like no other man I ever knew. I have his signature on a 1948 Notre Dame football along with Leon Hart. It is one of my prized possessions. Coach Flynn taught me to be to afraid of failure so it never happened again to me. Leadership, discipline, fundamentals, hard-work ethic, consistency, tradition, pride and excellence! Need I say more? Coach instilled all of these traits into his student athletes in leading by example and holding us all accountable for our actions. We learned to never give victim statements or point fingers! All we had to do to fix our mistakes was to look in the mirror at ourselves or use his best mirror, that old screen and noisey 16mm film projector! In four short years, Coach changed us from boys to men!
To the Flynn family, my sincere sympathies. He was and is a one of a kind Legend. God Bless you.

To the Flynn Family:
My condolences on the passing of a truly great man. During my years as Principal at PAHS it was my good fortune to have him on the staff as a football coach and teacher of mathematics. His dedication to his work was outstanding and the success that he enjoyed was obvious to all. That being said he was very humble
about accepting any praise. His trademarks of discipline, development of young people and expecting maximum effort from all were well known to all of us who worked with him. During my time it was also an opportunity to know
his four older children who graduated or attended the high school. They were fine young people which was a credit to their upbringing. During our lifetime we work with or know a few people who are very successful, make a huge impact and set an example to be followed. He is at the top of my group fitting that description. My thoughts and prayers are with the family on his passing. May you find peace knowing what full life he led
and also knowing that the entire community and his former students are better for having known him

Of the many wonderful and dedicated teachers I encountered while a student at PAHS (Class of 1986), I rank Mr. Flynn as among the most committed, respected and influential in my life. I'll be forever grateful for the countless hours of his own time Mr. Flynn spent tutoring those of us who were never meant to be mathematicians. He was a commanding presence and a man I will never forget. He will live on forever in the hearts and minds of everyone who had the priviledge to be taught and coached by him. What an amazing legacy he leaves behind. Rest in peace, Mr. Flynn.

My deepest condolences to the Flynn family...may all your wonderful memories carry you through this difficult time.
Coach...you will always be the heart and soul of The Tide. You had and continue to have such an impact on all the kids that had the pleasure of your guidance throughout the years....on and off the field. Your mere presence exemplified discipline, respect and compassion. You instilled in your students and players a passionate commitment to success. I personally want to thank you for your compassion in tutoring me every day before basketball practice upon my return to school after a debilitating illness. You sat with me every day and patiently taught me everything I missed. You made a difference...

To the Flynns,
On behalf of the Diminick Family, we offer our deepest sympathy on the loss of your husband, dad, grandfather and legendary coach. We know all too well the feelings you are experiencing right now. We always had the utmost respect for Coach, his teams and the program he built. (the Big Red even got crew cuts to emulate the Tide) His teams truly set the standard for all Coal Region teams. The discipline he instilled in his players, carried over to any Tide opponent. We always had to have our best effort whenever we played the Tide. Tide football was truly a reflection of the man at the top - class, respect, discipline, honor, pride, excellence, humility. An awesome coaching staff has been assembled in Heaven!!! Rest in Peace Coach, you made a positive impact on many, many lives.
