David Pickering Obituary

David Montgomery Pickering
Harpswell Neck - It is with great sadness that the family of David Montgomery Pickering announces his passing on May 3, 2021. Born in York, Maine on April 7, 1953, David was the son of the late John and Sarah C. Pickering of Salem, Massachusetts. He is survived by his wife of forty years, Jennifer Williams Pickering, and two sons, Brooks (Kelsey) of Bridgewater, Massachusetts and Grant (Samantha) of Mansfield, Massachusetts. David was blessed with two grandsons, Brandt and Reed, who adored their Pappy.
After growing up in Andover and Salem, Massachusetts, David owned a florist business in Portsmouth, NH which was the start of his life-long green thumb. His career path eventually led to a division head position at Gillette in South Boston. The respect and admiration of everyone he worked with came easily due to his management style and work ethic.
David raised his family in Kennebunk before retiring to Harpswell Neck. He will be remembered as "Pick" to his friends from Lawrence Academy and could often be found on the hockey rink, on the golf course or on Casco Bay piloting his boat "On the Blue". Many friends and neighbors were the fortunate recipients of the generosity and dependability of David's time. Whatever was needed he always said yes.
David was a past Commodore of the Arundel Yacht Club in Kennebunkport and was on the board there for eight years. In the winter he dedicated time serving the Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation Ski Program at Sunday River.
David also leaves behind his sister Katharine Pickering (Richard O'Dwyer), Bud (Wendy) Kellett, Bruce (Jean) Williams, Laura (Robert) Sullivan, Patience Williams, and many nephews and nieces.
We will all miss David's quiet presence and selfless, unwavering support.
A memorial celebration of David's life will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MaineAdaptive.org

David was a very special person and friend. His quiet, calm exterior belied his kind heart, sense of humor, keen intelligence and love of adventure. We valued his friendship and will forever remember him and our many happy times together with he and Jennifer. David's love for his family was obvious to all who knew him and he was so proud of his sons and grandsons. We know he will be greatly missed by all who loved him, including us.

I grew up on Holt Rd in Andover with David and Kathy just down the street. His parents were best friends with my parents, Ginny and Hayden Clark. I have great memories of my mom in her nightgown and trench coat, leaving in the dark to pick up David and together with my brother, David, she would take them to their early morning hockey practice at the Phillips Academy rink. It's been said that my mom and David's dad, John, a very colorful and lovely character, danced in their kitchen during some of those pickups. David was a gentle soul. I was very happy to cross paths with him a couple of times in the last several years. I am so sorry for your loss....he was a prince of a guy.
With love
