Bernard Haldane Obituary
Bernard HALDANE, Ph.D. May 15, 1911 to July 21, 2002 Born in England, Dr. Haldane was the founder of Bernard Haldane Associates, specialists in career development with more than 90 offices in the United States, Canada and England. He was the recipient of numerous commendations and awards from professional associations, as well as from Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. His publications include: Career Satisfaction and Success, Gifts For Ministry In the World, Job Finding Power, Job Power Now, A.E.C. Career Planning Manual, Dig Your Job, Ego Game, Management Excellence Kit, Career Focus, Career Planning, Young Adult Career Planning, How to Make a Habit of Success, The Best That's In You, and Manual for Career Development. After moving to Seattle in 1977, Bernard and his wife Jean were instrumental in the establishment of The Dependable Strength Project at the University of Washington. Through this Project he funded research to refine his methods for identifying individual strengths and to apply these methods in the schools. His Dependable Strengths Articulation Process has been successfully used by the U.S. Forest Service, Boeing Company, Microsoft, Harvard Business School and other schools, social service agencies and churches. Practitioners of this process can be found throughout the United States, as well as in England, China, South Korea, the Arab Emirate Republic, and New Zealand. In South Africa, he collaborated with the Anglican Church to found the Dependable Strengths Foundation. This Foundation is supporting newly trained practitioners as they use Bernard's methods to help unemployed South Africans find jobs using their strengths. For more than 55 years, Bernard Haldane has dedicated his life to helping others identify and value their unique strengths, and find satisfaction in their life's work. A favorite saying was "work should add life to living". He will be missed for his no-nonsense outlook, tempered by humor, kindness and generosity. His was a keen intellect, with the power to perceive, interpret, know and understand, with a goal to helping others uncover the best that was in themselves. He believed in the excellence of every individual, and tens of thousands have benefited from his writings, trainings, courses and workshops. Those close to Bernard will not forget his gifts as a storyteller, teacher and friend. He died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. Bernard is survived by his wife Jean. A Memorial Service for Bernard Haldane will be held August 8th at 4 p.m., St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 4805 N.E. 45th Street, Seattle, WA. 98105 (Laurelhurst area near Children's Hospital).
