Charles McIntyre Obituary

Charles A. McINTYRE, Sr. Charley McIntyre, beloved husband, father, and grandfather; passed away peacefully in Seattle , WA. on Wednesday, October 29th, 2008. He was 85 years old. Charley, as he was affectionately known, was born November 20th, 1922 to Charles Anthony and Muriel Ellen McIntyre in Philadelphia , PA. He was the eldest of five children. His father was a heavy equipment operator and union organizer, who once sparred with Jack Dempsey. His mother raised the children through the heart of the Great Depression. Young Charley was a great help to his mother in the early years, always lending a hand, and guiding his sib lings into their youthful adventures. Charley excelled in sports, and was captain of the Central High football team in Philadelphia . He went on to play football at Villanova, and played semi-pro football with his two broth ers for the Philadelphia Shamrocks. It was a chance invitation to try rowing on Boathouse Row in 1942 that would change his life. He soon devoted himself to rowing, and won the Schuyl kill River mileage trophy five times. Along with his brothers Richard and Joe, he was asked to row at the es teemed Vesper Rowing Club, when it was re-opened by Jack Kelly Sr. in 1945. Rowing for Vesper, they won multiple titles in the quadruple, dou ble, and single sculls. Charley won five national titles in the double sculls and competed in three Olympic Trials. In 1949 he followed his younger brothers out West to Seattle.where at the behest of Royal Brougham they were asked by Victor Denny to open the first sculling program in Seattle at the Seattle Tennis Club. They soon befriended the world famous boatbuilder and rowing legend George Pocock, who taught them the subtle graces of sculling. Charley became a true disciple of Mr. Pocock, and would go on to share this knowledge with fellow rowers for many years to come. Charley was a consummate teacher. He coached elite champion rowers over a span of 45 years, and he taught masters rowing in Seattle well into his 86th year. He also taught skiing at Alpental and Snoqualmie Pass over a span of 50 years. He had an instruc tors eye for detail, and would share his ideas with the interested, and the not so interested. In the past two years, following his 83rd birthday, he competed twice in the World Masters Rowing Champi onships, while fighting off the cancer that eventually took his life. During this time, Charley showed grace and a quiet courage that inspired all those around him. He has a log book of friends and acquaintances rivaling that of a foreign diplomat; he had a gift for conversation, an Irish wit, and he shared a true interest in his fellow man. For those who knew Charley McIntyre, the waters of Lake Washington , and the snows of the Cascades just won't be the same without him. Charley will be missed by his immediate and extended family. He was our loving father and patriarch. He is the beloved father of Bridget Ann (Richard) Cooley, Molly Ann (David) Fitch, Maura Ann (Luke) Imperatore, Charles Anthony McIntyre, Francis Joseph McIntyre, and Meghan Trudy McIntyre; grand father of Broderick Christopher Fitch, Georgia Ann Imperatore, and Charlotte Ann Imperatore and special niece Shannon McIntyre Woods; brother of Richard William (Joanne), Joseph Patrick (Bebe), Muriel Teresa (Alvin), and Barbara Rosalie; former husband of Ann Cummins McIntyre and Mary Martha Curo McIntyre. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 14th at 12:00 p.m. at St. James Cathedral, 804 9th Avenue, Seattle. Reception to follow at Seattle Tennis Club, 922 McGilvra Blvd. E. My fondest memories of Charlie where during the Neighborhood years growing-up on capitalhill. He taught me how to row single sculls and later with becoming a ski instructor.Charlie's patience and kindness during those years are the principles I remember most and carry with me to this day. God bless you Charlie.

My memories of Mr. McIntyre (since I am his daughter Maura's friend, this is how we referred to him) involve skiing and the beginnings of Alpental ski area in 1968. His friends at the time scouted out all the possible sites for Alpental and decided on the valley where it now sits. He was known as a great skier and instructor. I shall always picture him at the Goldener Adler condos up there. What great times we all had on the slopes of Alpental!

Bobo was special to all of our family (Joey's kids) and will be missed. His legacy will not only be in his contribution to rowing but in his principles and approach to life that will be fostered through his children and their children...He did so much for my Dad and Shannon...A true gentleman and a real warrior!

It was with a note of sadness that I read of Charley's passing. I only knew him for a very short period of time but he impressed me enough that I have never forgotten him.

It was in 1951 and Charley was the playground director at Brighton Playfield in South Seattle. I was playing on a 14 and under team from Van Asselt Playfield and we played several games and practiced at Brighton on occasion. Charley was the umpire for those games and he did an absolutely outstanding job. He was so good that I even wrote on the back of a picture, I had taken with my mother's old Kodak, "Charlie" mcIntyre, best umpire in the League. That picture was taken in June of 1951, Charley was a handsome, muscular guy who wore "shades". I was aware of his prowess as a rower but more than that he was a fine example to a young boy on a playground ball field. Any of the family are welcome to contact me concerning the picture which has followed me for the last 57 years. Rest in peace, Charley.

I had the destinguished priviledge of being the coxswain for Charley and the other three U.S. octogenarians at the 2007 FISA World Master's Regatta in Croatia. He was an inspiration, being committed to the sport at 83, as I'm sure he was in his younger years. I will cherish the memory.

We had a great time talking with Charley over a nice holiday visit near Philadelphia several years ago. He was visiting some of his old Philly "haunts," and we were visiting our extended family. He, "young Charley," and Elaine stopped at Mom and Dad's house. He was a warm, fun, charismatic gentleman with lots of fun stories to share, and he shared them with gusto. Warm regards to all of his family and those who loved him ~~

I met Charlie in Seattle through his son Charlie. It is safe to say Charlie lived life in a large way. He was very proud of his family and loved rowing. He took me to his home and shared the view of the Sound and you could tell he was in his element. He is probably already organizing a crew in heaven.

I don't remember ever meeting Charley although I think I might've been a wee-one. I wish I'd known him better. On to the next life Charley, I'll see you there.

Uncle Charley believed in our Dad when no one else did -- I know he rests in peace with the best company! God is by his side! I will be eternally grateful for everything he did to help my Dad and our family. It is a very unique person that demonstrates such devotion.

I know many at the Boathouses will miss him, CMRC will miss him terribly and, as for me, it goes without saying. It is as if I lost my own father.
