Emily Cator Obituary

Emily Parrott Cator

Emily Parrott Cator passed away at home in Normandy Park, Washington on January 17, 2017 after a brief but brave battle with a rare and very aggressive form of lymphoma.

Emily was born in Morristown, New Jersey, and raised in Dickeyville, Maryland. Upon her graduation from St. Mary's College of Maryland in 1976, she joined VISTA and was assigned as a volunteer in several Seattle hospitals. She received her Masters of Social Work from the University of Washington, School of Social Work in 1978, and continued post-graduate work at the school through 1990. She worked at Seattle's Ryther Child Center 1983-1990, and later at the Children's Home Society of Washington. She had a 25-year career with Casey Family Programs where she was committed to improving the lives of children, youth and families. She was a social worker supervisor and director in Casey's Missoula Montana office. Upon returning to Seattle in 1996, she remained with Casey until her retirement in July 2015 as the interim office director.

An accomplished photographer, Ms. Cator loved the outdoors. She enjoyed hiking, camping, backpack trips, kayaking, sailing, snow-shoeing, and dog sledding. She traveled to Europe and New Zealand, as well as many of the mountains, deserts, forests, and shorelines of North America. Her love of animals began at a young age when she participated in horse riding demonstrations and competitions. She had several beloved dogs and cats, and fostered many litters of kittens for adoption.

Ms. Cator is survived by her husband, Douglas Cator of University Place, Washington, her step-daughter Tami Malloy and her husband David of Forest Grove, Oregon and step-son Christopher Cator and his wife Kelsey of Pasadena, California. She has three beloved grandchildren, Grace Malloy, Tayanna, and Xavier Cator. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Thomas and Patricia Parrott of Manassas Virginia, and was a fantastic aunt to four nieces and their four children. Her many loving friends and relatives will sorely miss her kind heart, adventurous spirit, sense of humor, counsel, and love.

A commemoration of her life will be held in May on a date to be announced. Donations in her memory may be made to the Angel's Fund of the Regional Animal Services of King County or Seattle's Art with Heart Foundation. Sign Emily's on line Guest Book at www.Legacy.com.
A celebration of Emily Cator's life will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 2 pm at the Normandy Park Community Club, 1500 SW Shorebrook Drive, Normandy Park.

It has been several years since Emily passed away, but please accept my deepest sympathy. I grew up with Emily in Dickeyville and she was a lovely friend! I named my daughter after her!

I send warm wishes to Emily's husband and family. I just learned of Her passing today from a colleague. I worked with her at Casey Family Programs and later at the YMCA of Greater Seattle. She was devoted to helping those young people most in need. I always enjoyed her kind, intelligent and intentional style, she was one of the kindest colleagues I ever worked with. My heart goes out to all in her close circle. Warmly, Rose Quinby

It's been a month ago today (April 2) that friends and family of Emily Parrott Cator celebrated her life with a beautiful ceremony down at the Cove in Normandy Park. The sun was in and out (mostly out!) and the clouds over Vashon Island and Puget Sound provided plenty of classic Northwest drama and beauty. In the late afternoon, Arthur Greef and I towed Emily's kayak into the Sound and scattered some of her ashes, together with the ashes of her beloved dog Oula, to be together in that gorgeous place and in those waters she loved to kayak so much. Of all things that have happened since she died, this gave me great catharsis and some closure. We love and miss you deeply, Emily! Huge thanks to Tami Malloy and Michael Smith for the stunning photos to remember this very special day.

Sending my sincerest condolences to Emily's family and dear friends for their great loss.

Chiming in another one of the Dickeyville 'Girls'.. our formative years (together) garnered strength for each of us, as well as etched deep, loving, lasting memories.

I can still hear Em's sweet, warbly, young voice, as we stood together in a circle harmonizing - 'Turn, Turn, Turn. . to everything there is a season. . and a time to every purpose. . under heaven'.

Emily's purpose fulfilled, her life of amazing service, her kindness, caring, and keen sense of social responsibility lives on in all of us. May you/we find a measure of peace. . .

I grew up with Emily in Dickeyville. One of my favorite memories is when I would spend the night at her house. We got to sleep in the beautiful guest room. We talked all night long and in the morning her mother made blueberry pancakes which was a rare thing back then! When I had my daughter, I named her Emily. I have a picture of both of my favorite Emily 's!

So very sorry that Em is gone...

We grew up in Dickeyville together and I can still remember her sweet smile, sparkling dark eyes and beautiful long brown hair. Emily was always sweet! She was gentle but she could be feisty too! I remember when the Beatles had just become famous and a group of us girls started our own Beatles fan club at the Parrott's house. We had cardboard instruments and borrowed white shirts from our dad's closets and tried to fix our hair Beatle style. Then we would rock out to the latest tunes...I loved that girl and I know she will be sorely missed. Heartfelt prayers go out to all the family and friends for our loss+++

With the heaviest of hearts I send you my condolences.

Emily and I grew up together in Dickeyville. We were part of the "Dickeyville gang". We spent from our youngest years through our late teens as friends, and then as life would have it, we moved on in different directions.

I always have held dear the memories of my childhood, and will continue to do so with special thoughts of Emily.

My sincere wishes for comfort and healing,

Tricia Colgan Barrett
