Judy and Family,

I'm so sorry to hear about Gary. He truly was one of my all time favorite patients, Despite feeling poorly, he kept up his sense of humor and continued to push himself to get well even when I know it must have been so hard.

Judy it was also such a pleasure to get to know you and your positive and loving attitude I know helped him in so many ways and made our job so much easier.

I was an art student of Gary’s from 1973-1976 at Hyak Junior High School. He was one of my very favorite teachers growing up! He had great passion for art that he past onto me as well as many of his other students. Thirty-three years later I still have the passion for art that he instilled in me. Today, I work in clay as a ceramics artist. His life was far reaching. Thank you Gary. My heart goes out to Gary's family and many friends.

Regards,

Steve Mahler

Judy, I learned of Garys passing through one of the other nurses who read the obituaries. I had thought about him the day before and felt quilty about not visiting as I said I might do. He was a much loved patient of ours and we all wished him to recover but quess it was not meant to be. I admired your constant positive attitude at least in front of Gary. You were an inspiration to us all and an amazing support to Gary all those months at the hospital and beyond. There are many people thinking of you and remembering Gary at Swedish hospital ICU. Come see us someday. Sincerely Sheri Shirley RN

I had the privilege of having Gary Adrian as a teacher at Hyak Jr. High in Bellevue, WA from 1972-75. Mr. Adrian was my all-time favorite teacher and was also a friend. He was funny and creative and we had lots of laughs in the art room in those days. In our family, my brother Blane was the "jock" and I know Bruce Brown was his favorite teacher and coach back at Hyak. Me being more of the art & music kid, I gravitated to the art room and loved hanging out with Mr. Adrian, who championed my interests in creative areas. He assisted me as I painted the murals in the hallways at Hyak and also worked with me on my design for the "Alki" yearbook cover in 9th grade. I also took his early-morning "survival" class, which included a weekend trip to the ocean with the group along with he and his wife at the time, Deirdre. What a blast that was (now this would have made a hysterical reality TV show!) He also loved music and I too remember him liking Elton John, as we created a silk-screen design for an Elton t-shirt when he came in concert that year. Having Gary for a teacher made it all that much harder to leave Hyak and go face the high-school world at Sammamish. My most treasured school days will always be those I spent at Hyak - and mainly because of Gary Adrian. He signed my yearbook "Gare Bud" - which we jokingly referred to him as. So this is for you, Gare Bud...it's been over 30 years now since you were my teacher, but you touched my life and will always be a big part of my fondest school memories. God bless you and be with your family. See you in the big art room in heaven!

We had the privledge of knowing Gary through basketball - Gary coached our daughter Desiree and always gave her and the other girls encouragement, knowledge and fun for the game. In our lifetime few people pass that really make a difference - thank you Gary for making a difference. You will be missed by all that knew you - but what a legacy you leave behind - We should all be so fortunate. God bless you, and your family.

Gary was my basketball coach when I played in the JBA select program. He was a wonderful coach, teacher, motivator and friend to all of his players. Looking back on that time of my life now, I see the impact that my coaches and teachers including Gary had on my life. To have someone really believe in you at that age was pretty special.

My deepest sympathies go out to all of his family and friends.

I had the privelege of working with Gary @ Beaver Lake Middle School, he did a long term sub job in the 2000-2001 school year. My middle son also had the privilege to have him for a P.E./Health teacher that year. I don't think a day went by w/o my son saying something about Mr. Adrian, either what he said or what he was teaching them. My son is in his second year in college and still remembers Mr. Adrian from the 8th grade. I contined to work with Gary with his Bestline business, talked with Judy many times, "what a wonderful lady you are Judy", I also had the privilege of meeting one of the girls a few years back. In closing, no matter where I go here in the great northwest and the subject of education comes up and I say Gary Adrian's name, the comments to follow are " what a great teacher, coach and guy". He was and always will be an instution in and of himself in the education, coaching and business fields. "Gary, I miss you, God bless you, Judy, the girls and your entire family". I will never forget you saying "piece of cake, don't sweat it". Peace be with you.

To the entire Adrian Family -

Gary was a great teacher and an even better friend. We taught together, shared our lives and families and laughed and smiled every day we worked together. We had FUN! Most of all he had a deep impact on my teaching style and beliefs.

Teaching with Gary at Islander Middle School on Mercer Island, sharing lunch, making a difference with students and talking about his family and friends is something that I miss everyday.

Gary was a teacher. His passion for teaching and working with young people was an ideal that many strive to reach but only a few have the passion and dedication to truly make a difference. He could look at a game and make it better for all students. He knew when to make you laugh, when to push and when to just relax and they will figure it out. He cared deeply about education and had a passion for teaching and working with young people.

I will never forget the day he told me he was no longer going to teach at IMS. I tried to talk him out of it. Gary continued to teach through his coaching and Bestline. He focused on his daughters and grandkids and was very proud of each of them and each time I saw him he would tell me what each was doing and have a funny story about being a parent and grandparent. The stories were always told with a smile in his eye and love in his heart.

On behalf of the students you taught in over 35+ years of teaching and coaching, we will miss you. From the student you taught to ride a bike, from the student you taught that life is about mistakes not about success, from the student you taught that risk and trust is a good thing, from the student who learned that being different is a good thing and from all those students who loved having class with Mr Adrian - Thank you for making the world a better place.

We will miss you Gary but we will never forget you. Thank you for making me a better person and teacher.

Love Zeke, Becky and Sam

Many thoughts come to mind when thinking of Gary Adrian. Some of my favorites include: countless rounds at Carnation and one special round at Pebble Beach; games of "Bump" in the backyard; marathon tennis matches in the summer; Lake Washington football and "Goya D." Gary will be a part of my life for some time to come. I am reminded of Gary every time someone in my family says "piece of cake, no sweat." Gary would say this when he was usually over-his-head with some weekend project. Memories of these projects, that are now part of Matheson lore, include replacing a deck, two different basketball courts, and a huge retaining wall. Gary, you will be missed but not forgotten.

Teachers, Like Mr.Adrian are one of a kind, He gave me self worth, confidece, and a future in the art world. I have never forgotten him, so handsome, funny, and encouraging, He made school fun! One of my fondest memories was in the 8th grade at Hyak when he took a bunch of us to go see the movie Tommy, WOW, way over our heads, but it was great! Every time I here an Elton John song I think of you, Mr. Adrian, and I always will. Thank You, And God Bless you and your family.

My thoughts go out to Mr. Adrian's family, he was a wonderful and giving person. I will always remember him as Mr. Adrian, as he was my teacher at Ringdall Junior High. He introduced me to photography and encouraged me in so many ways. He taught me that there were many ways to be an artist that didn't include drawing pictures (which I could never do). I remember talking with him about cats and finding a home for a cat. He was one of those rare teachers that finds the best in every kid and helped nurture that. I feel very fortunate to have been his student. He will be missed.
