Genevieve Gorder Obituary

Genevieve T. GORDER Age 96, slipped quietly into the arms of her Lord early in the morning of May 26, 2008, at the Hearthstone where she had been a resident for the last 6 years. Gen was born on May 7, 1912 in Grafton, North Dakota, to Christian Olaf and Gertrude Loseth Gorder. She received her zest for life while growing up on the farm surrounded by her 5 siblings. She graduated from Grafton High School and then began her quest to become a teacher. She attended the Mayville State Teachers College. During the summers, she attended classes at both the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin. Eventually moving to Seattle with a group of fellow teachers, she received her BS in Education from the University of Washington. In the ensuing years, she also studied at the University of Hawaii. But she had one more calling and off she went to pursue instruction on how to teach Braille at the University of San Francisco. Her first job in Seattle was in West Seattle, followed by Loyal Heights and North Beach Schools. She eventually found her niche in teaching Braille in the primary grades at Queen Anne School. Gen was a faithful and highly evolved member of University Lutheran Church where she taught primary youngsters in Sunday School for many years. She also traveled to Europe with church-related groups. She was an active member of an Education Sorority, becoming its president. Although quiet in personality, she was a person of determinate resolve along with distinctive elegance. She is survived by her sister, Donna G. Gorder, with whom she resided for many years.. She was preceded by brothers Cy, John, and Oliver and by sisters Lilian Rorschner, and Lois Restemayer. There are also a number of nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at University Lutheran Church, 1604 NE 50th Street, Seattle, WA 98105. Memorial donations may be made to the University Lutheran Church.
