Janice Swanson Obituary

Janice M. (Hoodless) SWANSON Age 67, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away Tuesday, March 15, at her home on her beloved South Umpqua River. She died due to complications from cancer. Janice was born in Seattle, WA in 1937 to Frank and Jean Hoodless. She graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Education and was a member of the ZTA sorority. After college, Janice moved to San Diego, CA to teach, where she met and married Olof Erling Swanson, of Mamaroneck, NY in 1962. After three years in San Diego, the couple moved to Medford, OR for 2 years, then on to Roseburg. Janice taught in three states, but primarily in the Winston/Dillard School District from 1974 through 1994. She also taught at St. Joseph's, Sutherlin West, and various substitute positions in Roseburg and Winston/Dillard schools. Janice is survived by her husband Erl, two daughters: Kristin and her husband Scott Smith of Springfield, OR, and Laura and her husband Allen Danskine of Bellingham, WA, and four wonderful grandchildren. She also leaves two brothers Gary Hoodless of Palm Desert, CA, and James Hoodless of Issaquah, WA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Janice loved teaching. She touched many hearts, minds and souls in her career as an educator. She made a difference in countless lives and will be dearly missed by many. She leaves behind not only her family, but also numerous friends whom she thanks for their support throughout her illness. We will all miss you, Jan. Jan did not want a service. She suggested that donations, in lieu of flowers, may be given in her memory to a teacher's fund payable to either Green Elementary School: 4498 Carnes Road, Roseburg, OR 97470 or Brockway School: 2520 Brockway Rd, Winston, OR 97496.
