Jerome ELLERING Obituary

Jerome Bernard ELLERING, md

Born: Lastrup, Minnesota

February 6, 1919

Died: Tucson, Arizona

May 5, 2013

Lived: With intent, imagination and passion. His greatest personal adventure was challenging himself and those around him to question belief systems and ideologies, confront unexamined assumptions and engage informed and creative thinking, for oneself. A voracious reader, he stayed current with the events of the world through his love of technology. He used his Kindle and IPAD up to the last days of his life. Quite likely he was one of the oldest Facebook subscribers at 94, enjoying the chance to share photos and quips with his children and grandchildren.

He excelled in his vocation as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist in King County, for 40 years. As a life-long learner he expanded his avocations continually, including learning to ski at age 55 and winning a NASTAR silver medal shortly thereafter. Age was never a deterrent to a new experience. He started piano lessons in his eighties and played into his nineties. He truly was both maverick and Renaissance man.

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather we honor his legacy of inspired living, and grieve his absence. Thank you Pops, we love you!

Ellering Family - knew your Dad for about 20 years as his patient. He delivered all but one of our eight children - that one beat him out before he got to the hospital! We remember him fondly.

Dear Ellering Family:

Your father and mother were such beautiful, kind, fun and intensely gifted people.

Dr. Ellering was not just an OB doctor, he was a genuine, old-fashioned family doctor. Before 911 was a part of our life, if there was an emergency, your dad would be called. He'd make better time than an aid car. I recall choking on a bone and not being able to breathe. Your dad was summoned and arrived in what seemed like seconds and dislodged the bone, saving my life.

Your dad was "bigger than life" to me as a child: tall and handsome, with his unforgettable booming voice and love of conversing on all subjects.

Your parents were always the life of the party, and talked to me easily and readily - not as one would to a child. I loved all the Ellering kids, and recall hours spend watching Alfred Hitchcock and scary movies in the downstairs family room while your mother endlessly ironed. I learned to love practical jokes from your family, and remember the family kitchen always being the epicenter of conversation and activity, tea and coffee for our mothers, and yes(!) - I remember those great potato chips, too!!

My love, treasured memories and thoughts to you all. You were blessed with phenomenal parents - truly the Greatest Generation.

Jerry and Mari. 'We come and we go' he said.

Jerry and Margaret Ellering were very close friends of my parents. Many of my fondest childhood memories were with their wonderful family. Margaret Ellering and my mom, Gerri Gianelli, used to go to the A&P together on Friday nights and then go to Chung King across the street and have a coke and a cigarette. It was absolutely thrilling to get to go along with them.

Jerry Ellering was a terrific conversationalist who loved the Beatles (which made him cool) and he was always so much fun to be around. It was such a treat to hang out at their happy house (and the fact they always had great snacks, like potato chips, made it even more fun).

Please accept my condolences for the loss of your wonderful father. He and Margaret were absolutely lovely people and they are truly missed.

Dr Ellering deliver both of my sons, 1973, 1980. First physican I ever had. I was young and scared. He was so caring and calming. I will never forget what he did for me. Through the years he always remained a cut above the rest. Bless Him and his family

Even great granddaughter couldn't distract him from I-pad and world events.
