Matthew Stone Obituary

Matthew Lee STONE Age 40, of Olympia, passed away May 8, 2007 at the University of Washington Medical Center from complications following a heart transplant. Matt was born June 15, 1966 in Seattle, WA to Loren and Sharon (Barnes) Stone. He graduated from Shorewood High School in 1984 and went on to play football at Oregon State University until he graduated in 1989 with a degree in finance. In 1992 Matt joined the Washington State Patrol. He started as a trooper working the roads of Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia. He loved serving the public and working the late night shifts so he could catch the "bad guys". Matt was promoted to sergeant in 2000 and then to lieutenant in 2006. Throughout his career he was a dedicated, hard-working, honorable man. In 1993 Matt married Julie Crouch and they made their home in the Olympia area. They had two children and a busy home life began. While Matt enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading he especially enjoyed just hanging out with his kids. He was a terrific baseball coach and devoted soccer-football-basketball dad. All in all Matt was a great dad, husband, brother and friend. Matt had a quiet inner strength and dignity that served him well during his long battle with his heart condition. He never gave up and was more likely to say "see you later" than "goodbye." All of those who knew Matt will miss him dearly and remember him fondly. Matt is survived by his wife, Julie; son, Jakob and daughter, Megan of Olympia; his parents, Lorena and Sharon Stone of Olympia; sister, Suzanne (Kevin) Holden and nieces, Elizabeth and Camryn of Everett; mother-in-law, Norma Jeanne Crouch of Olympia; sister-in-law, Sadie Elliott of Cottage Grove, Oregon; sister-in-law, Margaret Crouch of Ann Arbor, Michigan; brother-in-law, Drew (Kim) Crouch and nieces, Madeline and Gigi of Boulder, Colorado and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A Celebration of Matt's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 19, 2007 at South Sound Community Church, 4710 Park Center Ave, N.E., Lacey, WA 98516. A college fund has been set up for Matt's children at Washington Mutual Bank: Direct donations to the Stone Children Education Memorial Fund. "There are some who bring light so great to the world that even after they are gone the light remains." Friends may leave online condolences for the family at www.funeralalternatives.org. Loren and Sharon,

So sorry to hear about the passing of your son. I can still remember when you had the podiatric residents from Waldo over to your house for a party about 27 years ago (1980). Matt was 13 years old at the time and we were all playing ball in your front yard and I remember him saying how his feet were hurting. Of course we all began to look at his lower extremity alignment and mechanics and made many treatment recommenations. I was glad to see he went on to play high school and college football despite all of our recommendations!
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

We just heard of Matt's passing, we are so sad to hear of it. My family knew Matt in his high school years at Shorewood. He was a great role model for my older brother Jeff and was always my protector as I was always getting picked on by the my brothers' friends - Matt came to the rescue. Most of the time I deserved it, but he was looking out for me anyway. My family respected Matt for his integrity and enjoyed those high school years with him.
Our love and prayers go with him and stay with his family.

Having not known Matthew, and knowing the character of his parents Loren and Sharon, I can only think how fortunate we are to have indivduals like him choose a career in law enforcement. Our family sends our heart-felt thoughs, prayers and concerns to Loren and Sharon, and Matthew's family for your sudden loss, and my we provide the strength and support to move forward with the values his life reflected.

Although we saw Matt only briefly we shared these last few years with Loren and Sharon through conversations (mainly before 7 am since we of the south sound travel early), stories, pictures, and even Loren's video camera. What a brave, honest, hard working, caring son, father and husband. We have been touched by the love and strength of the Stone family.

My sympathy to the entire family! My name is Stacey Stanford, and I went to school with Matt. I had a nice conversation with him at our 20yr. reunion, and he exuded enthusiasm and love while talking about his career and family! I hope the wonderful memories help to comfort you at this time. My thoughts are with you, Stacey Stanford
