Nancy Rudy Obituary

Nancy E. Rudy

Nancy Elizabeth Rudy, 75, passed away on December 22, 2013 following a short battle with cancer. Nancy was born in San Francisco, CA, to Leslie Maxon Rudy and Elizabeth Anselmo Jones Rudy. The family lived in Redwood City, California, where her father was an executive director of the Port of Redwood City. Following the war, the family moved to the Seattle area where her father was involved in the maritime industry.

Nancy attended the local schools in Redwood City and then in the Queen Anne Hill area of Seattle. She graduated from Whitman College in 1960 with a major in education. She also took continuing education courses at the University of Washington.

Nancy's first teaching job was at Cascade Junior High. She then taught English and Journalism, and was the advisor on the student newspaper and annual staffs at Tyee High School in SeaTac from the 1960s through the '80s. She was a popular teacher who demanded the best from her students and encouraged many to pursue communications careers. Nancy served as vice principal of Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie for four years prior to retiring nine years ago.

Nancy was passionate about a number of organizations particularly those that involved helping students improve their lives or continue their education and dreams. She was a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer in the Kent area for over ten years. She also worked in the Highline School District in a program to help students who were at risk of not graduating from high school.

Nancy was active in the Washington State School Retirees Association, The Rainier Club, the Seattle Tennis Club, the Washington Athletic Club, and the Association for Women in Communications. She was also involved in the Whitman College Alumni Association, the University of Washington Alumni Association, and regionally in Sigma Delta Chi/the Society of Professional Journalists.

Nancy had varied interests throughout her life. She was an avid fan and long-time season ticket holder of the Husky football team. She also attended the Seahawks games, played bridge and golf.

Nancy had a deep love for dogs and made sure that her small rescue dog, Chelsea, had a good home before she could no longer care for her. She loved to travel and made trips throughout the U.S. and to several other countries including England, Wales, China, and Egypt. She also enjoyed cruising and visiting Mexico. Nancy enjoyed her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens at her home.

Nancy was an elegant woman who brought dignity to everything she did. She is survived by cousins in Idaho and California as well as her close friends.

I met Nancy Rudy through Women in Communications, Seattle Chapter many years ago. We became good friends 10 years ago and I have such great memories of all we did together. Nancy was a class act--elegant and dignified always. I enjoyed attending UW Husky football games with Nancy and other events at UW. I miss our long talks and special lunches. Rest in Peace, dear Nancy. You were a great friend.

Nancy was a past state president of the Washington Journalism Education Association and remained active after she left teaching to enter administration. She continued to chair WJEA's scholarship committee and judge state contests. She had many friends and admirers in WJEA and will be remembered fondly by her colleagues.

Nancy was an elegant lady with many talents. She shared her elegance and talents with many. I was privileged to know her through our shared membership in Kappa Alpha Theta. Thank you, Nancy, for all the ways your shining example inspired so many in so many ways.

Miss Rudy was pivotal in my education. She was my teacher and advisor in journalism at Tyee High School in the late 70's. My experience in her class motivated me in my writing, and in pursuing accounting and business practices. She was a wonderful teacher and influence.
