Steven Higgins Obituary

Steven C. HIGGINS Died at home on June 16, 2007, three years after his diagnosis of a brain tumor. Born June 26, 1970, Steve grew up primarily in Seattle, with a two- year stint in Lausanne, Switzerland, where his father's work as a professor of finance took the family in the early seventies. He spent four memorable years at Lakeside School in Seattle, where he formed a number of lifelong friendships and served as coxswain for the men's crew. Steven was voted valedictorian of his class at Lakeside and went on to Yale, where he was winner of the Timothy Dwight College Master's Cup for contributions to campus life. After graduating in 1992 with a degree in English, Steve took several political and media jobs, finally landing at Dow Jones Newswires. He worked variously as a reporter and editor at Dow Jones in New York, London, and finally Washington, where he resided at the time of his death. Steven maintained an extremely creative life outside of work. He read avidly and pursued his interest in writing by taking continuing education classes. He was fashionable and a man of many enthusiasms. Steve loved music, food such as is offered at London's gastropubs, art and travel. With his quick, relaxed wit, he was a great correspondent, a gracious host and a wonderful friend. He met his wife, Tara in 2002 and they married on August 1, 2004, just after his first surgery. The two of them traveled whenever possible, including a belated honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast. Steve made his mark in fundraising for brain cancer research during the last years of his life. Three years running he organized one of the top teams in the Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers Race for Hope 5K Run & Walk to benefit the Brain Tumor Society, held annually in Washington, D.C. Surviving are his wife, Tara, of Washington, D.C.; sister, Sara, of Mountain View, CA; parents, Rocky and Genie of Seattle; and maternal grandmother, Louise Sharp, of Overland Park, KS. Friends and family celebrated Steven's life on Saturday, June 23 in Washington, D.C. A similar celebration will take place on Friday, June 29 at 2:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Upper School in Seattle, WA. The family requests that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the Massachusetts-based Brain Tumor Society (www.tbts.org), the Children's Hospital Foundation in Seattle (www.seattlechildrens.org), or the Steven C. Higgins '88 Memorial Endowment for English at Lakeside School (www.lakesideschool.org).

Hi my name is Kate and my Grandma Bunny had a cabin I spent a great deal of time in and i found her guest book that was signed by a peggy Higgins. I am thinking this may be her brother and I just would like to say I understand the lose as my father past from bladder cancer in 2016 Jeffrey Ekness and I miss him every day. I hope Steve has found a way to pass as my father I fear is still with us.
