A warm smile, a firm handshake and a funny joke told with a Norwegian accent. These are all things I remember about Sven Helleren. I'm also looking forward to living in one of his mansions of gold in heaven since I'm certain he won't be entirely happy up there unless God puts him to work supervising some construction project, and, because I can't afford one of his homes down here.

To Sigva, Jan, Leif and your families, I always thoroughly enjoyed working with Sven and each of you. It is a tribute to your dad for the values and work ethic he instilled in you. I pray that our God wraps his loving arms around you in this time of loss. And I thank the Lord that we will see him again in heaven.

I remember first meeting Sven when I was a young land use planner for the City of Edmonds in 1979. What I quickly learned was, while you may have a disagreement, once Sven gave you his word, things were done per the agreement. He did quality work. He passed these traits onto his sons. I will miss him.

Every day that Sven walked through my door, he made my life brighter. He never missed an opportunity to make me smile! He brought a sense of quality to everything he did from the perfect pickeled herring, to a beautiful dream house to the lives of people around him. He will be missed by everyone who knew him but never ever forgotten. What a blessing he was to us all! I am so sorry that I am unable to return from Montana at this time for the service, but I send you all my love, sympathy and a great big warm hug like the kind Sven used to give.

I will have to say I will miss all Sven's lines about having no money for new shoes along with his smile and chuckle. What a pattern of respect and loyalty he left for all his boys. The end of an era, but I still see a little bit of him in all the rest of you. Be proud of that.

Sven was usually one of the first people in the door at Claire's Pantry for his one cup of coffee and the newspaper. His favorite line was "are you going to sit down and buy me breakfast?" Almost everyone who came in knew him by name. He was a true Norwegian character (this coming from a fellow Norwegian) and he will be missed.
