Some of your "words of wisdom" were ringing in my ears tonight. 17 years since our last conversation & emails, 17 years of wisdom I've gained from life's lessons and I wish I could have just one more of our talks. We always kept it real & thats hard to find now days. Miss you - visit me sometime, you know where to find me.

There are so many times where I think about what you´d have to say about the current state of the world and it always makes me chuckle. Then I think of your jack-in-the-box impression and I start to laugh out loud. I miss those moments more than you know. Miss you man.

Tre.....I miss you, Bro. Sometimes more than others. I can't believe it's been more than 16 years that's passed since you left. Seems like a few months ago.
Sometimes I feel like I can almost talk to you. That you're that near. Then there are times of crushing grief, because I know you have truly moved on from this life. I don't cry for you. I cry for me. I cry for what I've lost. You were always a big deal to me. You still are. For Mom's sake, I wish you would have been the one in mourning. You were better equipped to be the one still here. But that's not the way it went. So here I am and there you are. I can't hardly wait to close that distance. Until then, I know you got my back. I'm trying, Dog. Love you Big Bro.

Heard a story on the radio today that made me think of you Tracy. When we played for Sealth you were always a great teammate. I'm positive it was the same when you entered the service. I know you always wanted to be in the armed forces. To hear that you achieved the rank of SSG, and all the great things people you served with have to say about you makes me extremely proud. To know you accomplished much of what you dreamed of is inspirational to me even now. Rest In Peace - I'll see you when I get there.

SSG Melvin,
It's been just a little over five years since Ramadi. Half a decade. I can still remember you coming into the S2 shop to talk with my guys after completing a recent mission - the last one I can remember you debriefing with us on. You'd already cut your troops loose to get chow and were content to keep going on dip and nervous energy. It's as clear in my mind as though it were yesterday and I know that I'll never forget it for as long as I live.
Less than a week later, you were gone from our midst. Hearing your name at the memorial service was impossible - like someone had misread an order awarding you another ARCOM.
God keep you, my man. What you meant to us cannot be conveyed in words.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It was a privilege to know Melvin at Ft Myer, he was a strong person and would reliably handle matters. Melvin was always full of life and willing to teach other soldiers, especially in the field. There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

My first day of being assigned to C.co 3rd INF.(TOG),a bright eyed, deer in headlights, know nothing private, who should i run into...SPC. Melvin, a monster of a man and an incredible soldier who instantly gave me the nickname "Chet" that has still stuck with me to this day. I had the pleasure of being one of Tre's "projects". After a little of SPC. Melvin's training programs he became a good friend and leader, he helped me thru my promotion board, tactical training, and my EIB which he "pinned" on me himself.
There is no doubt that I would not be who I am today without Tre steping into my life, I will miss him greatly, rest in peace my friend, and thank you for everything. To Tre's family, my deepest sympathies for your loss, it was an honor and a privelage to have known Tre.

SSG Tre Melvin. No words that I can speak will ever justly describe what an incredible person, leader, and above all, soldier that this man was. One fellow soldier, 2nd Platoon’s SGT Jason Ogris said of him, “He was a great brother and warrior that any smart man would be proud to fight next to.” SPC Michael Mumford, a former team leader in SSG Melvin’s squad said proudly, “I will miss SSG Melvin, he was a great and Patriotic American, but above that he was a brother and a warrior.” Sensing a recurring theme yet? When I was a Cadet in Army ROTC, “Warrior Ethos” was an idea that was regularly reinforced to future officers. And for a long while of my short army career that was all it was- an idea. That is until I met SSG Tre Melvin- the walking, talking, breathing embodiment of all things “Warrior Ethos.” This man was not only intimidating in stature and demanding as a leader, but without a doubt truly passionate about his profession- about fighting this nasty war we are fighting. He tackled every obstacle he encountered head-on and never backed down, never faltered. It was this intense passion- passion to fight and win against insurgency that led his patrol Sunday evening to investigate the area on Route Pacer on which his vehicle was struck with an IED. Many would agree that there were areas in Tre Melvin’s life in which he sometimes settled for less than the best- but all would affirm that his job was not one of them. He always expected nothing but the best from members of his squad, from his peers, from his leadership and from himself. It was this consistent toughness and reliability that earned SSG Melvin my complete faith and trust. Training and working together since June of last year, I grew to rely on SSG Melvin for many things- to help the platoon run, to complete the mission, and to keep me from being as jacked up as most young Lieutenants are. And he did. A couple of months ago I was on my first ever dismounted combat patrol- a patrol near C-Lake- I admit that I was somewhat scared. But then I looked over at my Alpha Section leader, SSG Melvin, and thought to myself, “Well, he doesn’t look scared, he looks damned determined, and he’s been here before, he knows what he’s doing, and I trust him.” I figured if he wasn’t scared, there was no reason for me to be- and at this moment, any fear I had was gone. That’s the kind of leader and soldier this man was. He was tough, rough around the edges, diligent, relentless but hilariously funny and caring when he needed to be. On the evening of Sunday August 6th, This Company, Task Force, Brigade, Division… This U.S. Army… became just a bit weaker. They lost every Platoon Sergeant’s jackpot of a Squad Leader and go-to-guy. And Me- I lost My Squad Leader, My Section Leader, My invincible Superman, My Rock and most of all My friend. SSG Tre Melvin will be sorely missed and never forgotten- true Warriors never are.

Upon my arrival in C Company, 3rd U.S. Infantry (TOG), there was this highly squared away SPC who offered his assistance in learning the "ropes" of C Company. SPC Melvin was of great assistance in helping a young SSG learn The Old Guard way and made me a better leader. Through out the time we worked together I knew that if I looked over I would see "right". Not once when I emulated his actions was I ever lead astray.
I am profoundly sorry and aggrieved for this monumental loss to our country, our Army, but most of all his family. It pains me to know that Tracy was snatched from us much earlier than he should have been, but through my pain I will always remember the times we had in the off-post room. In that room we all built a bond that will outlast all of us, a bond of duty, camaraderie, but most of all, one of service to each other through our friendship.
May God bless Tracy's family and keep them strong through this turbulent time.
SFC Ed Parkins

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

"WOW" What can I say, we have lost a truly great American, my heart is heavy but when I think of the all fun times we had, I can smile.
I know you are with GOD.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Melvin family. You will be missed.
I was one of his squad leaders in the OLD GUARD we had a great squad and and Tre was the BEST soldier in the Company we all loved Tre like a brother, Darrell, Rodney, Marlin, Strem, Ed and Flounder and the rest of the gang. Tre was always quick on his feet when it came to come backs on Ed and Ward and we used to laugh for hours upstair in the loft of C Company. We all knew you where going to make a great soldier. We watched as he grew into a warrior. I have many photos of Tre on our missions while stationed in D.C. I will miss you brother (RIP), I dont know if that huge Roc you had is up in heaven with you but if he is just remember to take Kevlar for his walks.
I love you and I will always remember you. May God Bless the family and friends of Tre.

I was Melvin's first squad leader in the Old Guard and like everything I have read about him in different articles, he wanted to be with the Soldiers and leading from the front. He was a great leader like some he read about and an excellent person to be with(RIP, brother). To mom and dad you all did a great job in bring him up, be proud as we are. I remember him when he was a brand new private, so he is like one of mine as well. Thank you for letting us have him for the time we did. God Bless!!!!

I served with SSG Melvin, those who knew him , knows that he was one hell of a soldier and man.
I received the call from his first squad leader in the army, and I just couldn`t believe it , why is it that the great ones die young! I take comfort in knowing he died doing what he loved , and his parents did a wonderful job raising a great man. To all that new Tre will know that he was such a great man and friend. He was true, honest and the type of person that would give you his shirt off of his back. I knew Tre from Ft. Lewis we were Squad leaders together and served in the Sinai together. We were more than collegues but frieds as well. I remeber so many times hanging out with him and one trip to Vegas stays in my mind. He was a very courageous man who loved his country like know other. I will continue to do my job and fight the world of terror so my kids wont have to. Tre will always be remembered as a friend and to all that loved him continue to do so because you know as well as I do that he is watching and smiling down on you. Keep his loving memory alive and never stop believing.

Tre was one of the first true friends that I meet in the Army. We both joined at the same time and served together in D.C. He was and will always remain a buddy that I enjoyed talking with. I will always remember him because he never would stop working on something until it was complete. May GOD Bless his family in this time of sympathy.

To the family and friends
I have only just begun this journey and may not have known your loved one personally.
I extend to you my deepest condolences. No words will ever express the grief those close to this lost treasure are feeling. I can only say that I can share this grief as I too lost a loved one July 8, 2006. I will continue to pray for the safety of our soldiers and especially the family and friends of our lost hero’s. I only hope the memories will carry us through. I will continue pray that you also will believe and know that our heavenly father will not give us more than we can handle.
As always I read (and cry) through the memorials of our lost hero’s, So many people have already expressed the things I would also say. I am amazed and take comfort that so many people care. I can only thank you for the sacrifice you and especially Tracy have made to protect our country. As others have said “I am only an email away.” I would be honored if you so choose to share about this fine hero.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Bill & Jan - I just found out today and I am in shock. I know you are so proud of Tracy and I remember him well as a kid and young adult. Unfortunately I didn't get to see him after he joined the military - but he appeared to love it! I'm still in the disbelief stage, but I wanted to let you know that you are in my thoughts. You have also known me since I was a kid - you were another family to me. Now that I'm in my "late" 30's I will always have fond/fun memories of your family. I promise that I will have time to take a camping trip with you in the future.

I knew Tracy when him and I were kids. We lived on the same block and he'd come over to my house and ask my mom if I could come out and play. My mom said he'd sometimes ask her "Mrs. Croslin, can I have a cookie please." I wish I knew him as an adult, but have faund memories of him in our childhood.
God Bless him and his family, and I thank him for honoring our country.

To the family of my great friend,
Words can't describe my deepest sorrow for your family. My name is SSG Brad Watson and I served with Tre for almost 3yrs to include his first tour in Iraq. Not only did I serve with him but we were friends off of work. I still remember the time we went to London for the New Year of 2003, or the time him and I went on a WWII memorial trip through Europe with Bastogne being one of our favorite stops. I remember Tre driving me to work every morning because I did not have my overseas license. There are soo many memories and I'm just crushed for your great loss. Rest assured he was a Brave Warrior and would not want his life to have gone any other way! I will miss Tre forever and will keep the memories of our friendship dear to my heart! I will continue to fight the War on Terror until the day I can no longer walk in his honor as I know he would do the same for me! May God be with your family now Tre and watch over me buddy!
Drive on!!!
Sincerely
SSG Brad Watson

To the family of Tracy:
I am very sorry for your loss. This I know first hand is a difficult time, and the pain so deep. Tracy is a hero. The bravery, and unselfishness these soldiers demonstrate is remarkable. I have heard stories of what a remarkable person Tracy was and still is. Your family must be very proud . Please take a few minutes for yourself and realize how lucky you were to have been a part of Tracy's life if only for a short time. May God bless you and your family during these difficult times.

I knew Tracy from football in high school. He made my time as a trainer fun- he was quick with jokes and great for the occasional bear hug. He will be missed.
A grateful soldier

to Jane and Bill,
I don't really know how to start and which words it would take to express what I would like to tell you. Actually there are no words to express the grief you feel about the loss of a beloved great person as Tre. I wanted to speak to you in person and tried to get in touch. I dont know if you moved but if you still have my number/address please contact me since there are still some things I would like to tell you in person. I hope that you find the strength this takes. We all know that he was a real good caring man with goals in life. I'm unbelievable sorry but as already mentioned I don't find any words to say.God bless you and in our hearts he will always have a very special place! Jasmin (Germany)

To the Family of Staff Sgt. Tracy L. Melvin:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.
