William Mong Obituary

William Norris Mong

April 29, 1950 ~ June 11, 2019

Bill was born in Tacoma, WA, to Norris and Margaret Mong, joining older sister Suzi. The family moved to Seattle when he was 7, and he made lifelong friends at John Hay Grade School and Queen Anne High School, graduating in 1968. At the University of Washington, he was a proud member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He kept in close contact with many college friends over the years and was a longtime member of the Tyee Club, rooting for his Huskies. He had a long and varied career as a tugboat captain and in the maritime industry in and around Seattle. He retired to Greenbank, Washington on Whidbey Island in 2013.

"Uncle Bill" was a constant, devoted presence in his family's lives. He shared his love of music with his nieces, teaching them the words to his favorite Beach Boys songs and hits of the 50's. Together, they'd choreograph dance routines to entertain friends. He always attended soccer games and other family events, and stayed up late to assemble toys for his nieces' Christmas tree. With his gregarious personality, he collected friends wherever he went. He had a genuine love of learning on any topic, and interest in anyone new he met. He was filled with colorful stories of his travels and many friends.

Bill is survived and lovingly remembered by his sister Suzanne "Suzi" Callahan, nieces Mary Margaret Callahan (Seth Gerou) and Kathleen Callahan (Joe Benson), and great-niece Margaret Jane Gerou.

At Bill's request, there will be no service. A gathering will be held at a later date.

I met Bill in our Freshman year at UW...we remained friends over the last 50 years. My whole family was saddened by his death.
His last words were probably "got to go Arthur".
He had so much love in his heart.
Miss him, Priscilla Raynor Wayne

What a lovely man (and family). "Billy" was a good friend to the Gardner family and we always enjoyed his presence wherever our paths crossed, which was often during our growing years and beyond. At the time of my brother's (Greg Gardner) passing and his celebrations of life/funeral, Billy spoke so kindly. He sought me out and wanted to talk to me personally. I loved his heart; it meant the world to me. I hope he and Greg join in spirit once again. I send tender thoughts to the Mong family.

Hey Billy, thanks for teaching me how to throw a football, and thanks for playing kick the can' with all of us. And, looking the other way when I was a stupid girl trying to grow up. Plus, being so complimentary to me when I showed you my medal from the Portland marathon. You were a very good guy. RIP, Leslie (one of the Gibletts)

I had the good fortune of having Bill as one of my best friends. We met in the spring of 1972 and then became good friends in our first year of law school at Willamette. Bill always had a good story or a fond memory to share. He loved his music and sports and could converse on any subject. Last saw him last December when he was at our home and we watched the Huskies top Utah to earn a Rose Bowl berth. We were both happy as could be. Our thoughts and prayers are with Suzi and the rest of his family. Pat Duffy

Bill was the nicest guy who stood by his friends, always. I will always remember his wonderful sense of humor, and positive personality. He used to tease me and my sister with the names my parents gave us as nicknames, that my brother actually created. He was a wonderful friend to my brother in his time of need, and as far as I knew, a great friend to friends Brad, Tony, and Guy. I will always remember him with affection.
May you RIP Bill, C.J.

Bill was my best friend. He stood with me when no one else would. I will cherish his memory, his humor, and his phenomenal recollection of years past. I loved the man. Scott Noble, John Hay Elementary, Queen Anne High School, and Phi Gamma Delta at the University of Washington. Bill and I both loved the sea, may he always have the best final horizon.
