Anthony Guilfoyle Obituary

Anthony Christopher Guilfoyle San Francisco lost one of its true treasures on Thanksgiving evening when Anthony Christopher Guilfoyle passed away surrounded by his loving family after a long and brave battle with cancer. Born in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland on December 23, 1935. Tony, as he was affectionately referred to by all who loved him, left his native Ireland at the age of twenty-one to travel to San Francisco, a city he referred to as "God's half-acre". He was the kind of man all of us admire self-made, wise, tough yet compassionate and above all loyal. His character was forged at the early age of nine, when he began work at a blacksmith's shop and later on a farm to provide food for his family. The eldest of six, he took a leadership role in raising his younger siblings, Vera, Nuala, James, Theresa and Frank. He set off for San Francisco in 1957 at the age of twenty-one to work with his uncles in the family construction business and later in real estate. He quickly came to love America and all it had to offer. This passion and commitment to his new home was demonstrated when he enlisted in the US ARMY and proudly served in Germany. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was a member of the Color Guard. In 1968 he met and married Mercedes Marie Gerena. The couple had two children, the pride of Tony's life, Kimberly Ann and Anthony John. Like many Irishman, Tony had a love of and gift for politics. He worked tirelessly and played a pivotal role on many political campaigns including that of Mayor Gavin Newsom. San Francisco Magazine profiled him and referred to him as "The Godfather" within the Mayor's inner circle. As a founding member of the San Francisco Coalition for Responsible Growth, where he served as an Executive Advisor, his political legacy lives on. He is predeceased by the love of his life, Mercedes. He is survived by his beloved children, Kimberly and Anthony; his grandson Ronan Anthony and his siblings. Tony was a force of nature, his passing is a loss to all who knew him, he is irreplaceable. It is no surprise that this man who we loved dearly and admired greatly would face the end of his life in the same way he lived it; with a generosity of spirit, courage, honesty, humor, optimism, and with great love for his family and God. His example has made the world a better place. A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations maybe made to: Gastro Esophageal Cancer Foundation(GECF), where his daughter serves on the Board of Directors GECF is a 501C(3) non-profit corp., Fed Tax ID # 47-0952238. 11418 Hylander Drive, Houston, TX 77070. www.gecancer.org

All of the Guilfoyle Family,
We were so sad to hear about Tony's passing. We were away and just found out 2 days ago. Paul worked with Tony and played softball with him at PG&E for many years. When our oldest daughter Christina died at 21 in a car accident 17 years ago on Nov. 8, 1991, Tony came over to our home among many other people to sit with us. I remember he brought me roses. When we saw Tony many years later and he and I were talking about that day and how I was doing. I said I was doing good but would never, of course, get over losing Christina. Tony said to me that you never get over losing someone you love and why would you want to. It was such a lovely thing to say and I will always remember that.
We will miss you Tony.
Love, Paul, Madeline, Michelle our daughter and her new husband John

Dear Tony & Kim,

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of your father. My family has such wonderful memories of him along with both of you. Personally I remember dinners at our house, and sleep overs at yours. There were basketball games in the OLM days...many other good times. He had a great love for you both that was very evident in his actions. I'm sure you both knew how blessed you were to have him. I consider myself very lucky to have had him in my life. He was a wonderful example of a loving parent. I hope that you can remember the good times and not dwell on the sorrow of his passing. You are in our prayers.

Dear Kimberly & Anthony,
Heartfelt condolences are being sent from Garden Grove Drive. I'm not sure you two remember us. Many, many years ago, Kimberly, you used to babysit our daughter, Rosa. Anthony, you took care of our dog, Guapo.
I have such fond memories of your Dad! His Irish eyes always dancing and quick with a smile. I'm so sad to hear of his passing, but he leaves his legacy in both of you. I have no doubt you made him very proud.

To Kimberly, Tony Jr and your families,

Please accept our deepest sympathies on the passing of Tony. He was a great person, who had unbelievable passion, commitment and loyalty to those he loved.

He shared very moving stories about how he raised you as a single parent, we often talked about raising children and how much they mean to us--how they change us in ways we never imagined. I learned plenty in the these discussions about being a good father.

I will miss him very much and his passion will live on through all of those he touched.

With love and respect,
