Dear David,
I just learned of Carol's passing from a colleague we had in common, and am so terribly saddened. I searched back to the last correspondence I had with Carol and you were traveling to the Florida Keys. We vowed to have lunch one of these days if I were in the Bay Area or she were here. She was recovering from a hip replacement. I am so shocked. She--well both of you, really, had been through so much. Her recovery seemed so promising. I hope her passing was sudden and unexpected and that she had a good quality of life to the end. I do wish she and I had had lunch together one more time....My sincerest condolences to you, David, and to Carol's family.

Dear David and Family,
We are deeply saddened by Carol's passing, especially after such a long and inspired struggle against her illness. We only met her a few times but were touched by her warmth and smile. She made us feel like we were a part of her family, and we will miss her. Please know that we are thinking of you at this sad time.
With deepest sympathy,
The Simmons Family
