David Arbegast Obituary

David E. Arbegast

August 19, 1924- March 28, 2016

David was born the second child of the late Hazel and William Arbegast in Arthur, Iowa where he resided until joining the US Army in World War II. He was a Sergeant in the Medical Corps and was attached to the 33rd infantry, the Tank Destroyer Corps and the Coast Artillery. After the war, he returned to Arthur, attended Buena Vista College and then transferred to Iowa State University where he received his BS in Landscape Architecture. He moved to California and received his Masters degree in Landscape Architecture from UCB. He met and married Mai Kitazawa and had four children together. He worked for architectural firms in the Bay Area until 1968 when he and a colleague opened their own Landscape Architecture Office; Arbegast Newton & Griffith, in Berkeley. He continued his practice until age 80. David was also a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and was an instructor at UCB in the Department of Landscape Architecture for 14 years. David enjoyed gourmet cooking, photography, fishing, watercolor painting, bonsai, gardening and spending time with his family and friends. He leaves behind children Deborah, Lisa, Michael and Katherine, granddaughters Victoria, Mikayla and Allison, sons in law Michael, William and Luke, brother and sisters in law, many nieces and nephews and cousins and dear friends. David is most remembered by his children as being a loving and caring father.

There will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to The Nature Conservancy or the Department of Landscape Architecture at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
