David Grubman Obituary

David Grubman, M.D.

August 7, 1924 - March 23, 2015

David Grubman of Berkeley, CA passed away peacefully in his home of congestive heart failure at the age of 90, on March 23, 2015. He is survived by his three children, Michael Grubman (Julia), Daniel Grubman, Barbara Grubman Alameda (Dan), his wife Lucy Scott and her two children, Cynthia Scott (Denis) and Susan Scott, his grandchildren Rebecca Grubman, Jessica Grubman, Madeline Grubman, Joshua Alameda, Benjamin Alameda and Joseph Alameda.
David was born in the Bronx, New York to Gedalia and Ida Grubman, growing up in a one-bedroom apartment. He graduated from DeWitt-Clinton High School and soon after joined the Army during WW II. He graduated from The University of Indiana School of Medicine in 1948. He then continued his residency in General Surgery at New York Hospital and Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco.
In 1955, he married his first wife, Doris Willner, and started his medical practice in Hayward, CA, on staff at St. Rose and Eden Hospitals. Michael, Daniel and Barbara were born during the next few years. After his divorce in 1971, he moved to Berkeley, CA and started his general practice near the University. He was on staff at the former Herrick Hospital and Alta Bates in Berkeley. Soon after moving to Berkeley, he met his second wife, Lucy Scott, a clinical psychologist. Together, they made their home in the Berkeley hills. Before and after retiring in 1984, he volunteered with the Peace Corp and other organizations as a physician on assignments in Israel, Vietnam, Togo, Nepal and Samoa.
David was a true lover of classical music, and took up playing the violin at age 36. He played in the Hayward Orchestra, and later was a member of the Kensington Symphony for many years until age 88. At his 90th birthday party, he played a solo for the crowd, and then announced he was putting down his violin for good.
David was an avid outdoorsman, where he pursued hiking, camping and snow skiing, teaching these skills to his children. They were a skiing family, spending weekends at the Sierra Club's Claire Tappan Lodge, in Norden, CA. Later on, he took up bicycling and along with his wife Lucy, bicycled through Japan, France, Scandinavia and many other countries around the world. He gave up snow skiing at age 80, while continuing hiking with the Sierra Club group through his 80's. He loved gardening and riding his stationary bicycle and engaged in both until the week before he passed. As an avid reader, David was a member of the Kensington Library Book Club, where he made many wonderful friends.
His family would like to thank Pathways Hospice for their assistance this past year, along with the staff at Senior Helpers and his caregivers, Stacie Johnson, Elizabeth Tarango and Geeia Edwards, who helped him live out his life in his own home.
At his request, a private memorial service was held by his family. Donations can be made to the Kensington Symphony, in memory of David Grubman, M.D.

I think of David surprisingly often. One strong memory was of his last performance on the violin at his last birthday party. How intensely he focused, and demanded we focus, on his satisfactorily completing his piece. I do hope he felt good about what he seemed to indicate would be his last time playing the instrument. As a gardener myself, I was impressed by how much he accomplished with significant physical difficulties. An impressive man in many ways, and missed by me and others.

Dan (and the rest of the family): We are grateful for the time we got to spend with Dave. He was feisty, opinionated, and funny (with a straight face). I admired his determination to live his years of declining health as fully as he could: playing music, swimming, enjoying his book club and friends he made there, and of course tending his garden. He was almost fierce about exercise as a way to heal, and about avoiding pain medication. We both remember with pleasure from the years before his health failed being part of some New Year's Day hikes to Point Reyes, attending his concerts, and dinners at Saul's. And he was very fortunate to have your tender care through his last months.

Dan, it's been many years since we've seen each other. I'm sorry that's its the news of your father's passing that reconnects us. My condolences to you and your family on your father's loss.

I was going through a file folder that held "memories" I found a letter from Dave dated 1976. I thought I would google his name and found to my surprise that he had recently died. We were skiing in Aspen In 1976 and each day we spent time in the swimming pool. As a result of a conversation we ended up going to a Mexican restaurant with your family where a good time was had by all. Dave graciously wrote us note " I wanted to drop you a note to thank you for the friendship you exchanged with my children and I" I hope this brings back happy memories for you.

Dear Dan-A lovely tribute to a kind and generous man. You were a wonderful and loving son to him and I'm glad you had so much time together. You'll miss him terribly, I know. May his memory be a blessing to you and your family. My love to you and your family at this difficult and special time. Sandy

Dan, There are few words that are adequate to convey how sorry we are to hear that your Dad has passed. Clearly a man of all seasons and for all times! One of his greatest gifts was you. May you find peace in the coming months and years as you discover a "new normal." You were a blessing when you arrived in this world and you held him in the palm of your hand as he joined the angels. May he continue to watch over you.much love, "Miss Smith"

Dan: I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. I never met him, but he sounds like such an interesting man and I bet he was a real character. I know that you will miss him terribly and my thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time. Losing a parent is so tough....Hugs, Terri Quinn Carville
