Don Ciucci Obituary

Don Ray Ciucci

DON RAY CIUCCI
It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected loss of our family's beloved patriarch, Don Ray Ciucci on July 21,2018.
A San Francisco native, Don was born May, 6, 1947 to parents Nello and Luisa Ciucci (deceased). Don grew up in the Mission Terrace neighborhood of San Francisco where he graduated from Lowell High School in 1965; attended the City College of San Francisco and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he earned a BS in City and Regional Planning. In 1972, Don was hired by the Daly City Redevelopment Agency where he worked until 1979. It was then that Don decided to pursue a career with the Daly City Fire Department. While promoting through the ranks, Don found his true calling in the training division where he was the 1995 Ed Bent Instructor of the Year award recipient and the 2003 California Firefighter's Association "Training Officer of the Year." In 2005 Don retired from the fire service as a Deputy Fire Chief, having left a lasting impression on the hundreds of firefighters he trained throughout San Mateo County. Unable to refrain from teaching, Don taught Fire Science curriculum at the College of San Mateo to the next generation of aspiring firefighters.
At age 20 Don met the love of his life, Debby Wettstein which started a 51 year love affair. They married in 1971 and bought their "starter home" in Pacifica, CA, which remains the Ciucci family home to this day. In 1981 Don and Debby had their first child, Angelina Marie Ciucci (deceased 2008), with their son Matthew Donald Ciucci arriving in 1985. Don was a devoted father who watched his son and daughter follow his footsteps by pursuing careers with the Daly City Fire Department and Daly City Police Department.
Having no shortage of hobbies, Don exemplified the craftsmanship and creativity of boat building as a member of the San Francisco Model Yacht Club. Spending his teenage years street racing on Brotherhood Way, Don fulfilled his passion for showing his vintage hot-rods as a member of the Golden Gate Street Machines car club. He was a member of the SF Italian American Social Club, and he was on the Board of Directors of both the Brockway Hot Springs Homeowners Association and the Daly City Operation Santa Clause Toy Drive (Since 1976).
We are comforted in knowing that he is now reunited with his loving daughter Angelina, his parents Nello and Luisa Ciucci and his father-in-law Fred Wettstein. Don is survived by his wife Debby; son Matthew; daughter-in-law Leslie; idolized grandchildren Mikey and Maggie; mother–in-law Lil Wettstein; brother-in-law Jim; nephews Rob and Chris Wettstein and his loving life-long friends and extended family. He is loved and missed beyond words.
In-Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Don's name to the CPMC Melanoma Research Foundation, 2015 Steiner St., San Francisco, CA 94115.
Friends may visit Thursday, July 26th, 2018 after 6:15pm at St. Cecilia Church, 2555 17th Ave., San Francisco where a vigil service will be held at 7:30pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, July 27th at 10:30am at St. Cecilia's.

Don added a unique dimension to the annual Car Crazy Promotion Car Show put on by our neighbor Carl Asaro. Both Don and the car show are gone. It was an event where old neighborhood guys had a chance to reunite. Life changes quickly and now we are in difficult times as seeing family and friends Is challenging.
Treasure life.

Don was larger than life and a true mentor and friend. I would not have made it through the academy without his support and faith in me. My career was a can of corn thanks to Don. I will truly miss him. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Cuicci family.

Chief Ciucci was one of my very first instructors at College of San Mateo when I decided to make a career change from nursing to firefighting. His enthusiasm for the fire service reassured me that I'd made the right career change, and i was extremely excited about my new journey. In that first class I met the love of my life. Little did Chief Ciucci know that in his class grew a new love story. We share memories about him all the time; I just wish I had the chance to thank him for it. He will truly be missed, but his memory will forever live on.

DON WAS LARGER THAN LIFE AND A GOOD FRIEND SINCE I WAS 16 YRS. OLD. WE MET AS A PATRON OF MY DAD'S HOBBY SHOP. HE GOT ME MY FIRST JOB AT THE CITY OF DALY CITY IN l975 UNDER THE CETA PROGRAM AS I WAS FRESH OUT OF THE AIR FORCE DURING THE VIETNAM WAR.
WE SHARED MANY OF FOND MEMORIES OVER THE DECADES. MY HEART HURTS FOR HIS FAMILY. WE WILL TRULY MISS OUR WEEKLY TALKS FROM TEXAS AS GAIL AND I BOTH SPOKE WITH HIM OFTEN. WE WILL KEEP AND CHERISH THOSE LAST MESSAGES YOU SENT TO US, DON. WE GOT THEM ON 7/24/18.

Don was from the old neighborhood and was a close neighbor of mine. I knew his parents and grandparents as he did mine. It's not surprising he's a wonderful person; he came from good stock. His passion for cars far exceeded mine, albeit my Super Sport beat his Buick. His eye for detail and perfection and ability to achieve it is a rarity. I admired that in him. If we missed a few years in between we picked up right where we left off. He was always a friend, always friendly, and always happy to see each other. I will definitely miss him. I know he's happy to see Angelina. My prayers go out to Debby and Matt and family. May they have the strength and patience to get through these difficult times.

Very Sad to hear of Don's passing. My condolences are offered to Don's family. Don and I worked a bit together on some federal funding for the design and construction of the Bayshore Fire Station (#93) on Martin Street for City of Daly City long long ago. He was by far the best project manager I ever encountered. What first impressed me was that he selected a firefighter-architect who knew fire stations and firefighter needs. His energy and enthusiasm for that building were amazing and contagious, and he succeeded in getting every detail right. Everytime I drive by that building, I see Don. It was and is an outstanding and remarkable achievement, one of many in his career and life.

One of the most genuinely talented, compassionate, knowledgeable, generous and humble people I've ever run across. A great mentor, story teller and friend. Throughout the years, generations of Firefighters (most active and lots retired) run not just their careers but their lives with the lessons that you instilled in us. I personally cant thank you enough for the time and care you took with each one of us. Your legacy is enormous and will continue for many years to come. To think you looked up to the Lone Ranger when in fact he couldn't hold a candle to you! You are sorely missed but will NEVER be forgotten.

Debby & Matt our hearts break for you, there are no words to explain.
You are in our thoughts and prayers

Don was my favorite instructor at CSM. His passion for the fire service is something I always admired, and learned a lot from. It was evident that he loved mentoring prospective fire fighters and I always felt that he truly cared about his students. He was one that I hoped to tell that I made it into the fire service when I do get in. My deepest condolences to the Ciucci family. He was truly a great man and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Its a sad passing and I have been cut to the quick. I spent many years debating, arguing, and praising Don all because his heart was in the right place. He was a "good man", a term not in vogue these days. My sympathies to the family.
