Donald Flax Obituary

Donald Flax Passed away peacefully in his home on October 16, 2009 at age 88. Born on March 17, 1921 on Bayonne, NJ to Louis and Lena Flax, Don enlisted in the Army in 1942 after attending the University of Alabama, and served in the signal corps with Gen. Bradley's HQ in Europe until the end of WW II. After the war, he moved to Chicago and started a retail art supplies and drafting materials business, bringing his younger brother, Alvin, into the business the following year. Eventually his parents and younger sister, Hilda, moved to Chicago. Don retired after 44 years in business and lived in Carefree, AZ for 19 years and San Mateo, CA for the past 12 years. Don was an avid golfer and art collector. He and his wife Serene donated a number of pieces of African art to the Cantor Museum at Stanford University and De Anza College in Cupertino. Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Serene, and their children, Robert of Menlo Park, CA, and Carole Segall and Patrice Flax, both of Ann Arbor, MI. Don was a loving grandfather to Brad and Lauren Segall, Sarah Flax and Alison Hainline, and a great father in-law to Susan Flax and Dr. John Segall. No services are planned.
