EDWARD LAND Obituary

Edward H. Land
As a devoted husband and father, Ed died of natural causes on Nov. 13, 2012 at Silverado's Senior Living Center in Salt Lake City, UT. Ed was 83 years young. Ed was born on March 5, 1929, in Des Moines, IA, the youngest of 7 children, to Russian immigrants Jacob and Mary Ginsberg.
The family moved to San Francisco, CA, where Ed attended school. He met his wife Lillian just before shipping out in the navy during the Korean Conflict; he served as a journalist in the navy. After he was honorably discharged, he worked a few jobs before he went into business for himself as an independent meat jobber, delivering bulk meat and cheese items to restaurants and corner grocery stores all over San Francisco. Upon retiring, Ed and Lillian traveled extensively; they especially enjoyed cruises and took their last cruise to the Panama Canal two years ago.
Ed was an athlete and enjoyed tennis, bowling, and golf in particular. He also enjoyed big band and classical music. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and served as Noble Grand, and was a member of the Masons and Scottish Rite. He was president of the brotherhood at Congregation Beth Israel Judea. He was an avid dancer, ranging from ballroom to square dancing. He was known as a joker to all his friends. He was very loved by his family, who affectionately referred to him as "Papa."
Ed is survived by his beloved wife Lillian, his loving children, Steven Land in Colorado Springs, CO and Sheryll Vanderhooft in Salt Lake City, UT, and his adored grandchildren, Cristina and Steven Land Jr. and Peter and Lauren Vanderhooft.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Olivet Memorial Park, 1601 Hillside Blvd., Colma.

Dear Sheryll,
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. He was such a wonderful man. It has been so many years but I think of your family often and the wonderful childhood memories. I hope that you, your mom and your brother are well.

Dear Sheryll:
My sisters and I just found out about Uncle Ed, and unfortunately we also were not aware that a service in his honor had occurred. But now that we know, I found you online and am so glad that I can send my heartfelt condolences to you and to Steve and to Aunt Lillian. Growing up surrounded by all the relatives was such a rich time of love and family. I clearly remember each and every aunt, uncle and cousin from my early childhood in San Francisco and in the 'golden era' of family get togethers in Campbell. I used to tell Uncle Ed and Aunt Lillian that they were my favorites because in all the hub-bub of those childhood times it was easy to sometimes feel a little lost in the fray. But Aunt Lillian and Uncle Ed had a way of making each one of us feel very special. They took the time to engage in conversation, and to really listen and to understand. Uncle Ed was such a sweet and good hearted human being. I loved all my aunts and uncles, but somehow the kindness and humor of my uncle Ed will always have a special place in my heart. I know that my sisters Emela and Devorah have similar memories. Please let Steve and Aunt Lillian and your children know that we care and are sending our love to all of you.
Most sincerely,Cousin Miriam (Mimi)

We'll see you someday Uncle Eddie! Thank you for all the fond memories and cruising in the meat mobile on your meat route. Such great times going up and down the hills of San Francisco in the V.W. van and shifting gears for you. I only wish I could have seen you once again before you went.

I am a childhood friend of Rochelle's. Uncle Eddie used to make us laugh all the time, with his "State Your Business", etc. A few years later he was my dance partner at Rochelle's 50th birthday party. Such a nice man!
My heart goes out to the family. Rest in Peace Uncle Eddie.

Papa's life long friend Len provided Papa with these Newport hats. Since Papa was so tall we could always find him with his neon green hat!

Papa I remember the first time I met you, you greeted Steve with a hug and a kiss. You did that each and every time we saw you. You were one of the funniest, kindest, tolerant and loving man that I have ever met. I'm grateful to have been there during your last days here on earth. I will always have a smile on my face when I think of you. It was an honor to have been your daughter in law and having you in my life for 30 years. What is the difference between meat and fish?...don't worry we'll keep the family secret.

Oh, Peter & Lauren, I'm so sorry. I have the fondest memories of your grandpa. He and I were buddies when I was really little. He introduced me to fine Italian cured meats at that very young age and I consider him one of the reasons I'm a foodie now. Much love for you in his passing.
