I knew Frank from the Golden Gate Casting and Angling Club where he was very active. I worked at the Orvis SF store and was also a member of the club. He was a fount of information and was always congenial and willing to share. One memory in particular comes to mind when he brought out an old fiberglass distance casting competition rod and allowed some of us "younger folks" to try it out with the "glass line shooting head". Was a trick to be able to pick up the line without pulling the head back inside the guides, which would fracture the line. I eventually got and threw a surprisingly long line with his rod and line. He smiled, looked at me and said, "yeah, that's how its done."
Like every fly tier around back then I used his fly-tying bobbins and of course his whip-finish tools were very popular too. I remember telling him that I really liked his long reach fine barrel bobbin, but that it started cutting my thread. We were tying flies and he said, "let me see that." He took the bobbin and said that sure enough I'd tied too many flies with it and worn down the edge, which sharpened it and would cut my thread.
He took it from me, and said he'd round off those edges so I could use it again. About a week later I saw him again and he gave my long-reach bobbin back in perfect condition. I still have that although I did manage to sharpen it again tying too many flies. By then though I had moved to the Orvis home office in Vermont so I couldn't have him fix it for me again. I retired from Orvis in 2015 and moved to Washington state, which was closer, but not close enough. I will always have fond memories of Frank.
Frank was a great man with many contributions to fly-tiers, fly-fishers, and fly-casters everywhere, and I feel honored to have known him.
