Fred John Engelfried, a resident of Orinda, passed away on March 27. A second generation San Franciscan, he was born Oct. 16, 1927. He graduated from George Washington H.S. in 1945, served in the US Army, and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1951. He was a mechanical engineer in the early days of Silicon Valley, working at Ampex, Memorex, Orion, and Apple, as well as Honeywell in Colorado. Married to Lila Blumenthal (George Washington H.S., grad 1947), they divorced after 30 years. A constant reader and inveterate inventor, he is survived by his seven children: Lori, Meg, Kathy, Bruce, Steven, Sally, and Mike; niece Cindy and nephew Craig; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Sorry to hear about the passing of Fred Engelfried. Although we have lost contact over the years, I still remember his playing the Trumpet when I was a little girl. A very hardworking and talented man, a good father, and good son, to Betty, my mother's cousin. Our sympathy to the family. Gerrie and Dick Young
