Lila Engelfried Obituary

Lila Jean Engelfried (née Blumenthal), a resident of San Ramon, passed away peacefully at home on October 13, aged 95. A second generation San Franciscan, she was born September 16, 1929. She graduated from George Washington High School in 1947, and attended San Jose State, where she studied journalism. She married Fred Engelfried (George Washington High School, grad 1945) in 1950, and together they raised seven children. They divorced after 30 years. An avid reader, crossword puzzle aficionado, word collector, list maker, and ping pong player, she liked nothing better than being with family. She worked as a secretary for many years (and typed 80 wpm on her prized IBM Selectric), but after retirement she found a second career as a Library Tech at Alameda County Library. She is survived by her seven children, Lori Erokan (Dennis), Meg Rich, Kathy Compton (Tom), Bruce (Gena), Steven (Tina), Sally (David Ryan), and Mike; fifteen grandchildren, Laney, D'Arcy, Will, Alice, Lily, Stacy, Nick, Jeff, Miranda, Rose, Maddy, Katie, Emma, Ellie, and Neva; thirteen great-grandchildren, Dash, Georgia, Isabella, Astrid, Zephyr, Lucia, Rowan, Evan, Clover, Sophie, Owen, Leonard, and Juniper; her beloved brother, Ralph (Christl); and dear niece, Cindy; and nephew, Craig (Kathy).

Dear Engelfried family,
I remember Lila so well when your Dad and she were first married. We would see them at Betty and Fred´s house when my Mom and Dad were invited.
Your Mom was so pretty and Fred, was so studious looking.
They were a handsome couple.
What a beautiful family they created.
I am sorry for your loss. Lila was fortunate to have you kids as companions. She led a blessed life with such a big family.
It´s never easy to lose your Mother.
May you remember the good times and laugh in her spirit.

My condolences to Lila´s children - Lori, Meg, Kathy, Bruce, Steven, Sally, and Mike and to their respective families.
I have such wonderful memories of having extended visits to your family home in San Jose when we were all so much younger.
Lila was always so welcoming to me and made me feel at home. I´m so glad I got to see her again over the recent years at our `cousin´ brunch/lunch events.
Her smile and grace will be fondly remembered.

Lila had a love for the water. 3 days per week she would attend NuWave, which is a group of people who exercised in the water. Rain or shine, Lila would be there. Many stories were heard about her amazing family. Lila, you are so loved and missed.

So sorry to hear this news.....I last spoke with Lila at my sister´s memorial in January......she was as vibrant as ever as we recalled people and events of the past, but she clearly was engaged in the present. My condolences to her family....a life well lived.
