Fredric Herskowitz Obituary

Fredric Herskowitz
07/26/2024
Dr. Fredric Herskowitz, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and physician passed away peacefully on Friday, July 26th. Fred will be remembered for his warmth, bed-side manner, and the respect and kindness he afforded to everyone he encountered.
Born on June 20, 1945, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Fred grew up in Johnstown, PA. After earning his BS in Chemistry from Washington and Jefferson College in 1967, Fred pursued his medical degree at the University of Louisville. He completed his Residency and Chief Residency at Temple University Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Pulmonary Disease at UCSF.
Fred served as a Major in the United States Army from 1977 to 1979 and then returned to Pennsylvania to become an Assistant Professor of Medicine for Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1981, Fred returned to the Bay Area to join UCSF colleagues in private practice in Oakland where he continued his career, retiring in 2022.
Fred held numerous leadership positions in his medical community, including President and Board Member of the American Lung Association of Alameda County, President of Medical Staff at Providence and Merritt Hospitals, and the Head of Critical Care for over 20 years. Fred also served as a board member for the Sisters of Providence Hospital System and President of the Board for Summit Alta Bates/Sutter Health Medical Center.
Fred and Anne welcomed 3 children, and later, 9 grandchildren. Fred cherished his role as grandfather, known "Popi" to his grandchildren and many others. Fred was known as the "baby whisperer," and could soothe any cranky infant to sleep. As the babies grew, Fred continued his bond with his grandchildren, taking them on regular outings to the Montclair Egg Shop and Oakland Zoo and building an army of Lego projects, many with Star Wars or Harry Potter themes.
Fred loved travel, tennis, cycling, photography, and good food. Fred particularly enjoyed traveling to Alaska, taking nine adventures to the Final Frontier with family and friends. Though Fred took photos all over the world, he treasured his images from Alaska, many of which he displayed in his office and at home.
Throughout his career, Fred touched the lives of countless patients, colleagues, and students. During his final hospitalization, colleagues and coworkers visited to express the impact Fred had on their careers and development as care providers. Fred's legacy as a gifted physician and mentor will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Fred is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anne; his children Lisa (Eric) Rager, Michael Herskowitz, and David (Cristina) Herskowitz; his older brother Howard Herskowitz; his younger sister Dava (Donald) Freed; and his grandchildren Sam and Will Rager, Jack and Joe Herskowitz, Makenzie and Madeline Herskowitz, and Rosa, Louisa, and Natalia Lastres.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the American Lung Association.

Fred was my best friend through our adolescence. Over the years I lost track of him, but fond memories of times with Fred, Ellen and David. I was very distressed to hear of his passing and wished to express (belatedly) my sincere sympathies to his loving family.

I was so very sorry to hear Fred had passed away and very sorry I was out of town for his service. He was a wonderful colleague, and I enjoyed many years practicing Cardiology alongside him. He was a fantastic Pulmonologist with both great wisdom and a terrific bedside manner. My last visit with Fred was at his office when he helped my wife with a bad bronchitis at the time.

To Anne, Howard, Dava, Lisa, Michael, David and grand kids, and the rest of Fred's beloved family:
Fred was many things to many people, but to me he was a cousin, neighbor, childhood friend on Paulton street, tennis partner (and "fierce competitor") and role model whose journey through college, medical school and specialty training was just a few years ahead of mine. But most importantly, he was a close friend who made sure we kept in touch and regularly communicated over the years, despite living on different sides of the country. He was a respected and accomplished physician in one of the highest and most stressful specialties (critical care medicine and pulmonary disease), passionately devoted to his family and friends, and was an optimistic and enthusiastic lover of life, sports, travel and many other interests.
Our families were always close, bonded by our Johnstown roots, and like his father Sylvan, Fred can best be described by the Yiddish word "mensch". I will miss him and his every couple of month phone calls very much.
Cousin/friend, Lee

Fred was a remarkable man, physician, and leader. In the early 1990´s, I was part of the Providence Hospital management team. Fred was a critical care physician and a medical staff leader. The merger of Providence with Merritt Peralta to create Summit happened during his watch. Fred bridged hospital, medical community, and faith differences with skill, patience, and good humor. He was a key player in making the merger happen. His clinical excellence, commitment to quality, organizational skill, and genuine care for all with whom he came in contact were a gift to us all. My condolences to Anne, Howard, Dava and Don, and Fred´s children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Dear Anne,
Lisa, Michael and Dave, All the Herskowitzes and the Ragers and the Freeds,

My Deepest Sympathy for the loss of your beautiful Fred.

I will always remember your warmth and kindness hosting me in your home in 1988 and 1989 when Lisa, Mike and Dave were so very young.

And now your family has grown into a whole new generation.

I was a young one (after your other Aussie Au Pair, Kate) from the "Bush Capital" of Canberra going wide eyed into a new and much bigger world.

Staying with you all in Oakland was a pretty great place to start my adventures.

Fred was so kind, generous and fun.

It was wonderful visiting you again at Waldo Avenue a couple of years later.

You generously hosted my parents for a lovely evening on their own trip to the Bay Area.

And it was so good meeting you again Anne, with Fred, on your trip to Australia some years after that.

My daughter Anna (now 24) was only 7 then we had a lovely day at Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

It is wonderful to know how many lives Fred made a difference to in his professional life as such a learned, passionate and gentle practitioner.

He was equally a wonderful family leader and friend.

For all who knew Fred, I wish the happiest memories of him to remain with you.

And long may Fred be remembered in your hearts.

Sincerely

Nicole Webber

Every person I have talked to about Fred has shared a story of how he helped them. I personally have several examples of him generously giving help or advice and doing it with grace.
He will be missed.
