George Canellos Obituary

George J. Canellos

Oct 17, 1930 - Oct 29, 2018

George was born in San Francisco to James and Sophie Canellos. He was raised on 8th and Fulton St. where his family owned and operated the El Portal restaurant, an SF institution loved by generations of natives. He attended Washington HS, CCSF and SF State. George loved all things San Franciscan, especially the49ers.
Upon graduation George worked for Pan Am Airlines as an Electrical Mechanic. Soon after, he began his three decade career working for the San Francisco Communications Dept as an Electrical Engineer and Systems Analyst. George was responsible for the purchasing and maintenance of all communication devices for the SFFD and SFPD. A proud moment was during the 1989 earthquake when all the systems functioned properly.
George married Barbara Siegel and had two children, Jana and Jamie. After divorcing he met and married the love of his life, Carol Parrish Canellos. They enjoyed traveling the world and hosting family and friends. They were together for over forty years and remained deeply in love.
George is survived by his wife Carol, and their children Jana (Ben Bergstein), Jamie (Kerry), Kevin Parrish (Kathleen), and Robin Parrish. He was the proud Papa to Amy, Samantha, Sally (Ayoub) James, Alexandra, Grace and Clare.
The family would like to thank all of George's caregivers for treating George with dignity and respect, especially Lorrie. A private family gathering will be held in his memory.

Goodbye my friend. You, my BFF, Carol and I have shared so many lasting memories. I danced at your wedding; we jitterbugged together on the Italian Rivera; toured the Mediterranean, Greece, Spain, Portugal and Germany to name a few destinations. You attended my graduation ceremony. We explored New York after Kevin and Grace's wedding. And all the many holidays that we shared. Our 40 years of memories go on and on. Thank you for being Papa to my granddaughters, Samantha and Alexandra. I miss you so very much, but hold our friendship close to my heart. It was a blessing and an honor to know and love you.
My heartfelt sympathy to all your family.
Sending loving thoughts and healing prayers,
Shirley Barksdale

Goodbye sweet Georgie. You fell madly in love with my best friend Carol at the Christmas boutique and she loved you right back. I was there for this dazzling event. I will always remember you standing tall and handsome in your tweed jacket. I will remember too,all the fun we had in Sonoma and Carmel. We loved the same girl. I miss you "question man"; I, and so many others, will never forget you.
