Gregory Brown Obituary

Gregory Laing Brown May 9, 1957 ~ Nov. 26, 2011 "Much is written about wine.... of its makers, its nuances, its myths. The white hot center of each wine's mystery lies in humble corners of the world, where growers pour their intention, their character and their love of labor into each wine." ~ Greg Brown - T-Vine Cellars Winemaker, Grape Guardian, Yoga Dude A creative force was born to Ronald J. and Sue Armstrong Brown on May 9, 1957. Gregory Laing Brown joined his older brother, Scott Kern Brown, on campus at Indiana University where both parents were closing in on graduation. Greg grew into a swoon-maker at Homestead High School then packed his guitar and headed to California State University at Chico, where he met his first wife, Mary Hall (now Maher). Greg was a V.P. of Venture Capital Funding at Bank of America, fostering one of Silicon Valley's early stars, Silicon Graphics. When Mary took a job at Buena Vista, Greg jumped to move to his physical and spiritual home, the Napa Valley. Greg started as a "cellar rat" finding mentorship with talented winemakers, developing a deep respect for the land, the grapes and their growers. His artistic enrichment poured life's lush experiences from each bottle uncorked. Greg launched T-Vine Cellars in Calistoga with second wife, Yvonne Marse. One of his proudest achievements was being named the San Francisco Chronicle's "Winemaker of the Year" in 2000. Yvonne lost her battle with cancer in 2003. Greg sold the winery to travel before moving in with Scott, sister-in-law Kari Nevil, and niece Taylor, and enjoyed living with Ron and Sue in their Bay Area homes. Greg lived with passion, savoring every experience with joy. We will never be the same without him. We will never be the same because of him. God rest you, Brother. You are loved.

Greg I am going to miss you from our days as roomates in Chico to the many years that followed, to our final days together on our 50th. Your witt, your charm and your drop dead honesty only my tears can tell you how much it hurts. You will always be in my thoughts and families prayers.

Greg always shared a pearl of spiritual wisdom that touched my soul when we got together. He was genuine, kind and thoughtful. I loved his deep appreciation for his wife Yvonne, and his love of family and friends. Greg challenged me to be a better person. I will forever be thankful of our relationship. Tears of sadness for Greg's family and friends and a heart filled with joy of life everlasting.

My most fond times with Greg were between 1974 and 1978. We were known to play guitar at his parents home in Cupertino, often to the displeasure of big brother Scott. Greg was gifted and passionate about everything he did. You are missed my friend.

I met Greg at a yoga seminar at Esalen in December of 2006. He was warm, fun, inspiring. A joy to be around. Yes, he shared some of his wine, which made for rollicking good fun around the dinner table.

Dear Family and Friends,
We met Greg and Yvonne twenty years ago at La Cancha Fitness Center and continued to play and work out with them for years--tennis, golf, gym stuff and of course, dining and wining!
We miss them both but hold dear the fun times and the love they shared with each other and us.
