Guy Murnig Obituary

Guy "Guido" Anthony Murnig

Surrounded by his family, Guy "Guido" Anthony Murnig passed away due to complications of a stroke on October 18, 2021. It gives us much peace knowing he is now rejoicing in heaven with his son Ryan (who preceded him in death in '97). Born March 7, 1943 to Guido Anthony and Mary Madeline Murnig, Guido grew up in Belmont, Ca. He is survived by his wife Debbie, his children Kyle, Lacey Thompson (Lucas), Guido (Taylor Serres) and granddaughters Abigail and Eleanor Thompson; sister Stephanie Edrington, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Guido attended Our Lady of Angels, IHM '57, Serra High School '61, St. Joseph's '63, USF '66, St. Patrick's Seminary '70, and was ordained in 1970. He was an Assistant Pastor at St. Patrick's (Corte Madera), St. Sebastian's (Kentfield), and Mount Carmel (Mill Valley), where he was known for creating and directing the beautiful annual Christmas Pageant. He resided and taught at Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield, encouraging a love for learning amongst the students and teachers. He later left the priesthood, fell in love and married Debbie Monardo Murnig, his wife of 43 years. Sharing their passion and talent for construction, they opened and operated Murnig and Son's Construction Company. He then went on to work for Stretchwall/MechoSystems, devoting 30+ years to the construction industry. Following retirement, he consulted for Goodwin Cole Company. He was a mentor, role model, and the epitome of a hard worker.
During his formative years, he developed his true passions of helping others and the art of gardening. Guido was an avid reader, who spoke eloquently and was fluent in Latin; frequently letting you know the Latin origin for the English term. He inspired many, often leading by example - his big heart revealing his wisdom and generosity - and he has left an indelible mark on his friends and family. As President of Southern Marin Pop Warner, and President of the Marin Catholic Boosters, Guido truly understood the importance of human connection, actively connecting people in new and innovative ways. The Season of Advent and the Birth of Christ was magical to him, and with the many Christmas lights he hung, he relished sharing this special time with others. He enjoyed the family traditions of Lake Tahoe and the many adventures camping at the rivers and redwoods of California. At Jedediah Smith State Park, Guido took camping to the next level with his famous chuckwagon, kitchen set up, and all day riverside coffee and cocktails.
Guido and Debbie lived in Mill Valley while raising a family of four, and later moved to Sonoma. Their ranch was his little piece of heaven on Earth and where Guido's green thumb flourished. His dream of an olive orchard came to fruition, and together with his family, Stage Gulch Ranch Olive Oil was created. When resting, he could often be found sitting by the pool with a book, a glass of wine in hand, listening to Italian Opera Music. It was here he found peace and enjoyment sharing life with his wife, children, and grandchildren; a light in his life.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Friday, November 19, 2021 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 3 Oakdale Avenue, Mill Valley. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in honor of Guido may be made to The Ryan Murnig Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Marin Community Foundation, 5 Hamilton Landing, Suite 200, Novato, CA 94949.

Dear Debbie,
You and Guido popped into my head today and that´s when I saw this obituary. I remember what fun we used to have together as neighbors and friends. I also saw that Ryan passed. I still have pictures in my mind of what a cute kid he was. I´m so sorry for both losses. I lost Jim in May. You can read his obituary online. Thinking of you.

Dear Debbie,

I am so sorry to learn of Guido's passing. He was an inspiration to me as a football coach and theology teacher (twice), in his lifelong support of MCHS, and in his resilience and devotion to family during life's travails, a true renaissance man.

Prayerful best wishes from Saipan for the repose of his soul and the consolation of your family.

I remember "Father Murnig" as the inspirational priest who could relate to us teenagers in his confirmation class during the mid-1970's. He made Catholicism approachable and a part of daily life. I'll always remember his special barbeque under the redwoods at Taylor State Park, and the tales of him racing cars with kids down the little road between Marin Catholic and St. Sebastian's. Many blessings to Debbie and all his family.

Guido will be greatly missed by all of us at Goodwin-Cole Company. I was honored to know and learn from him. Memories of his infectious "can do" attitude and his cheery Latin phases, as well as a few bars of a song now and then will keep me smiling when I think of him. He was a great mentor. My most sincere condolences to the family and other friends of this great man.

Guido performed a contractors inspection of our first home, forty years ago. He guaranteed an affordable price for his services. We were in our mid-twenties with two little ones. It was a fixer upper and his thorough description of the work required to make the home livable convinced HFC to lower the price. Guido refused payment and called it the first house warming gift. Such a kind man and great role model. Rest in Peace Guido and condolences to Debbie and family.

Guy and I go back to our Serra High School years and most especially our high school "Teen Club," which in the late 50's was very popular all along the mid-peninsula. Guy was, as usual, the president; the fellow who made things run. After a hiatus of 40 years I resumed contact with Guy 20 years ago.

He was a great guy and leaves behind many fond memories for me.

"Requiescat in pace," my friend.

So sorry to hear of Guy's passing. He and Roger were boyhood friends in Belmont and Guy was the best man at our wedding. We have been out of touch for many years but have many fun time memories. He was amazingly creative, even in his early years. May our Lord bring comfort and peace to all those whose lives he touched. Our love to his family.
