James Jarvis Obituary

James Frederick Jarvis
May 11, 1964 - August 11, 2021
James Jarvis better known as Jim or Crimp to friends and colleagues, was known throughout San Francisco as a Bar historian. Drawn to the Barbary coast in the 1980s he absorbed the rich culture through meeting local barflies and bar owners. His fascination with 19th century SF characters, like Emperor Norton, grocery bars and ever changing Sandbourn maps of The City inspired his writing. By studying City Directories at the library he compiled research for his book on historic bars from 1849 into the early 20th century. From this knowledge he wrote several bars histories in a chronological fashion. Establishments such as The house of shields, The saloon, The old ship saloon, and Comstock saloon, to name a few.
His passion for history led him to become a devout clamper of the ancient an honorable order of E Clampus Vitus. A fraternal organization preserving western history.
He is survived by his siblings nieces and nephews.
