Jeffery Meyer Obituary

Jeffery Wilson Meyer Jeffery Meyer passed away suddenly of natural causes on June 24, 2006 at home at the age of 83. He was born as the oldest child to Mabel and Wilson Meyer of this City. He graduated from George Washington High School and received his B.S. degree from the University of California at Berkeley from the school of agriculture. During World War II, he served in the Infantry as a 1st lieutenant in the Philippine Theater and received the Combat Infantry Badge. Upon return, he joined the family business of Wilson George Meyer and Co., a chemical marketing company dating from the 1860s, and served as president until his retirement. His business life was interrupted when he was called back into the Army during the Korean War. He returned to business after his service in the war. His hobbies were numerous, from scuba diving to fishing to photography. He was also an accomplished guitarist performing regularly at the Bohemian Club and in later years at the Jazz Café at the Smithsonian. He was a past chairman of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, and emeritus member of the Board of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution, and a board member of the Institute of Human Origins. In the 1980's he was a member of the San Francisco Host Committee and entertained Prince Charles of England. Mr. Meyer was knighted with the Order of St. Olaf by the Norwegian Consul General. He is survived by Janet Meyer, his wife of 61 years; two daughters, Pamela McLaughlin Ringler of Douglaston, NY, and Betsy Meyer Jorgensen, of Burlingame; sister, Harriet Meyer Quarré of the City; and four grandchildren. Private services were held and a Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 7 in San Francisco. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. or a charity of your choice.

Jeff Meyer was the epitome of what a great man should be. I only had the pleasure of knowing Jeff for two years by his association as a board member of the Institute of Human Origins. His many contributions to the Institute will alway be remembered. I will always remember him with a great smile on his face, a camera around his neck, and always a kind word spoken. My heartfeld condolences go out to the entire Meyer family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Thoughtful, kind, decent, respectful of others, gentleman. These are the words that first come to mind. Mr. Meyer's leadership, business methods, and ethics were an inspiration. He made those who worked with him into better people. The passing of Mr. Jeff Meyer is a loss for many. My deepest sympathies to Mr. Meyer's family.

Jeff was the kindest person who came through this world and gave so much. He was a great person to work for and a wonderful friend. He was the kindest guy and a person I had so much respect and appreciation for. He will live on in my memories forever and I will always cherish the fishing trips out of Oyster Point and Kona. Jeff was class act and in a league of his own. I extend my deepest sympathy to the Meyer Family.

We at Alexander M. McIver & Son are dismayed at the passing of the "one of a kind", Jeff Meyer.

We worked with Wilson & Geo. Meyer spreading the gospel of Calcium Nitrate in the early years.

He was always at his best and worked to bring out the best in all of us, who worked with him.

Our hearts are indeed saddened by the loss of Mr. Jeff Meyer and we give our heart-felt sympathy and condolences to the Meyer family. For those of us in his employ, we thought of him as a legend, a honorable man, a mentor and a true gentleman. He treated Kings and the common man alike - with respect and honor. Hopefully, we who were associated with him can continue his legacy by our actions, deeds and love of life.

My thoughts and prayers are extended to the Meyer family. Mr. Meyer provided a very different job interview back in 1990, one spent more on his visit to The Holy Land than on my abilities to sell fertilizer. I regret not having the opportunity to have known him better, His legacy will live on through the words of those that knew of his kindness and they share their special moments that they had with him. The world has certainly been and will be a better place because of him.

May God Bless you and keep you in his hands during these days.

What a wonderful man to have shared this earth with. He gave so much to his family, his friends, his community, and many charities. We will miss his sense of humor and, of course, his music.

So much, I have enjoyed working with him over these many years.

We extend sympathy to his family.

My deepest sympathy to the Meyer Family. Jeff gave me a job which became a career. I'm so greatful for the opportunities which came my way because of his confidence in me. I've never worked for a kinder, fair and supportive man. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers.
