Joe will always be in my heart.
He taught me the appreciation and full meaning of Jazz. It will always be with me.
And the beat goes on...

I played jam sessions with Joe in Berkeley and Oakland in the late 1950s at places like George's Northgate, LaVal's Cantina and in diverse living rooms, where we ran into legendary figures such as Pharaoh Sanders, Clair Fisher, Larry Bryggman, Ken Plourde and others. These sessions were a crucible for young jazz musicians. The players were serious, hip and intimidating. But Joe always made you feel welcome, with his warm smile and inclusive ethic. He was an excellent trumpet player, who showed considerable fire and technical skill, but who could also play lyrically on ballads, with a soft, almost breathy tone. Whatever bebop skills I acquired on tenor came out of those wonderful, scary, exciting sessions with Joe. I will miss him dearly.
