At about 8 pm Thursday April 30, on the eve of his 82nd birthday, (John) Peter Baumgartner embarked upon his last voyage, from California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, following a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by his sister, Anne, and several of his many nieces and nephews. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

A true gentleman and a good friend. We shared a house together at lake Tahoe. I met Peter as I knew him at Santa Clara University. Our friendship grew. I was once a guest of his at the Bohemian Grove. Such a fine intelligent man. I miss him and our friendship quite alot.

We'll miss Peter on the River Road and during his drop-in visits at Tahoe. A wonderful man whom I'm confident is conversing delightfully with his friend, my brother, on the other side. We'll miss him!

I just learned of Peter's passing. Rest in peace good and faithful servant. You are among the holy and beloved of God's precious ones. I shared many pilgrimages with Peter and enjoyed his level of theological reflection and expertise. I was especially grateful for the personal tour he gave us to his homestead and the San Juan Baptista Mission. It was a very memorable day, one filled with rich history, beauty and a deep love of California. You are missed, but must be ever joyous to be among so many holy souls. Go in peace.

I met Peter through his long friendship with my Father-in-Law, Frank Lenahan. Over the years we were periodically able to meet and very quickly share a mutual interest in the military, history, and international affairs. A brilliant, kind man. I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to know him!

I was shocked when I saw Peter's obituary this AM. Had I known he was not able to go to the Cathedral any longer, I would have gladly brought him Communion. Dear Peter will be prayed for at all weekend Masses at the Cathedral, and on our bulletin Beloved Deceased list as well.
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy, love, and prayer.
