John Crew Obituary

John Ralston Crew

John Ralston Crew, born May 27th, 1933 to Ralston Lewis Crew & May Verna Mills in Fallon, Nevada, went to be with the Lord on January 12th, 2017 due to complications from a major stroke. John is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Winnie Jean Weaver, along with his children, Sterling, Carl, and Jill (Crew) Cox, & his grandchildren, Krysten, Jordan, Justin, Jaiden, Joshua, Jillian & Jeremy, his sister Elsie (Crew) Van Horn, and his brother, Jim Crew. He is predeceased by granddaughter Julie Anne Marie, and sister Anna (Crew) Franklin. John graduated from Atascadero High in 1950, from Westmont College in 1954 where his basketball jersey #6 was retired and where he still holds the record for highest points in a game, and from St. Louis University Medical School in 1958. He had been a practicing vascular surgeon at Seton Medical Center since 1964, completing his internship and residency at Southern Pacific Hospital. He served as Medical Director of the Advanced Center for Wound Care at Seton. He published the first paper on carotid surgery without angiography and authored and co-authored numerous published articles on vascular and cardiovascular related topics. John partnered with Nova Bay Pharmaceuticals in developing a solution to treat Necrotizing Fasciitis (flesh-eating disease), and traveled around the world to promote this discovery. He retired in 2014 and moved with his wife, Winnie, down south to live near his daughter & family. John was also a founding member of The Covenant 4 Quartet, ministering for 50 years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb 18th, 1pm, at Dolores Park Church in San Francisco, 455 Dolores Street. Reception will immediately follow the service.

Heartfelt condolences...I played fast pitch ball with John many years ago....I remember him checking my x-rays while I was returning from an injury....He took them to his team just to make sure I was getting proper treatment....I enjoyed every moment spent with him....

I have fond memories of John and the Covenant Four singing at the Atascadero Gospel Chapel. What a great ministry. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

I was sorry to hear of your loss. He was a giant of a man,a true renaissance man as you know. I also remember him being so generous teaching me and many others how to waterski behind his boat that I'm sure guzzled gas like crazy. He also just handed over a wad of bills to a guy so we could rent jet skis on lakeTahoe even though he hardly knew me I was included . II loved his story telling and still remember several in great detail. I became a physician and have always strived to be friendly and generous like him. I look forward to spending eternity with him in heaven with our Lord. Bill Rylander MD
