I had the opportunity to get to know and interact with John when he was a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Audit Committee at Xilinx Inc. (now part of AMD).
John was very encouraging, supportive and always provided useful advice and guidance during our interaction. Also he had a great sense of humor. He will be missed.

I worked at HP labs for many years, as a lab manager and senior scientist. I had the opportunity to interact with John and benefited greatly from his advice, guidance, warmth and humor. He truly embodied the HO Way. He will be missed

I first met John in 1971 when he had rejoined HP from Hexcel, and he made a trip to HP Colorado Springs and helped review my nascent Logic Analyzer program. Six months later, he called me from Palo Alto to ask "are you the Chuck House who climbed Hunewill Peak in 1958?" Imagine that such a serendipitous thing would kindle a long and treasured friendship.
I began working directly for John at HP Palo Alto in 1982, and I subsequently married Nancy Young, the daughter of the family who hosted John when he arrived in the USA from the UK, a fact that gave us stories in common. His friendship long outlasted that marriage of mine.
It was a tumultuous time for HP, and John moved with grace from EVP of R&D to head the enormously complex and troubled Spectrum (RISCJ) computer program, bringing Joel Birnbaum´s talent along with him as they grappled successfully to bring it to fruition.
John´s acerbic wit, wide-ranging perspective, and ever-present optimism were such delights-I never tired of imagining that I might learn from him and in some small way emulate him. He was a colleague I will miss forever.
