John Fletcher Obituary

John Charles Fletcher
04/16/1933 - 02/15/2025
Dr. John Charles Fletcher, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and esteemed physician, passed away at home peacefully at the age of 91, surrounded by family. Born in San Francisco, on April 16, 1933, John spent the past 55 years in Kentfield, where he built a life centered around family, medicine, and his love of the outdoors.
John and his sister, Betsy, grew up in San Francisco during the depression and World War II, when their father, also a doctor, served in the US Navy. John's passion for medicine was evident from an early age. He graduated from the University of California as a pre-med student before attending UCSF Medical School. He later pursued postgraduate work at The University of Oregon and Harvard University, further honing his expertise in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Throughout his distinguished career, he was known for his compassionate patient care and dedication to teaching, serving as a clinical professor at UCSF for over 30 years.
From 1958 to 1960, John proudly followed his father and served in the U.S. Navy. In 1966, he married the love of his life, Judy, and together they raised two sons, Steve and Scott Fletcher. John was a devoted and proud grandfather to Charlotte, Will, Nicolas, and Thea Fletcher.
Outside of medicine, John found great joy in fly fishing, duck and pheasant hunting, skiing, scuba diving, walking, photography and world travel. He cherished time spent in nature and with his family. A lifelong sports fan, he was a passionate supporter of the Cal Bears, San Francisco Giants, 49ers, and Golden State Warriors.
John will be deeply missed by his wife of nearly 60 years, his children, grandchildren, sister, nieces, nephews and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His wisdom, kindness, modesty and unwavering dedication to others will never be forgotten.
A celebration of life will be held at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trout Unlimited, if desired.

Dr Fletcher was a great teacher and helped so many of us during our residencies, for many years. He and his partner Dr Morris Noble, were instrumental in helping me build my practice when I opened my office, and provided excellent consultation care to many patients I referred to him for GI care over the years. He was a wonderful man, and a superb doctor.

I was briefly a patient of Dr Fletcher and it was because of his compassionate care and expert medical knowledge that my pancreatic tumor was discovered. I went on to have successful surgery and treatment- that was over ten years ago and I´m still going strong. I always remember Dr Fletcher and am eternally grateful for him.

I first met John at Children's Hospital in the early 1980´s in the department of medicine. For many years he was one of the leading teachers and practitioners of medicine in San Francisco. He will be missed.
