Jose Apilado Obituary

Dr. Jose Campomanes Apilado, Ed.D.

June 11, 1935 - December 19, 2018

Dr. Jose Campomanes Apilado, Ed.D, died peacefully on December 19, 2018 after a valiant battle with Parkinson's Disease. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.

Jose is survived by his wife, Julieta; his children, Josie Banez, Mila Abella (Jun), Joaquin Apilado (Jocelyn), Lourdes DeVigal (Anthony), Veronica San Nicolas (Tony), and David Apilado (Gabriela); his grandchildren Joshua Banez, David Apilado Jr (Rose), Joseph Banez (Aissa), Jonathan Apilado, Alex Apilado, Alexis Burnett (Eric), Julian Banez, Nicholas DeVigal, Alyssa Apilado, Jonah Abella, Tristan Apilado, Maria Rufina Abella, Anya San Nicolas, Jason San Nicolas; and his siblings, Rosalina Booker of Vallejo, CA, Loida Ramirez of Euless, TX, Noe Apilado (Joan) of Wallace, CA, Evelyn (John) Newton of Dixon, Corazon DeCardona of Oakland, CA, Rosa Kay DeCardona of Oakland, CA, and Mahal Montoya of San Leandro, CA. He is preceded in death by his siblings, sister Lilia Adams, brother Jamie Apilado, and his parents.

Jose was born on June 11, 1935 in Fort Stosenburg, Angeles City, Philippines to Solficio Apilado and Sofia Campomanes. He married Julieta Simpao on January 17, 1959 at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Gagalangin, Philippines. Jose served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years and was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War. He graduated from UC Davis in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in Applied Behavioral Science and from the University of San Francisco's School of Education with a Masters of Arts degree in 1982 and with the degree of Doctor of Education in 1995. He received his multiple subject Teaching Credential in 1979 from UC Davis. Jose taught in the Vallejo School district from 1979 to 1986 and in the San Francisco School District from 1986 to 2000. After teaching for 21 years, Jose retired and enjoyed playing golf, traveling with his wife and close friends to the Holy Land, the Vatican, Fatima, Portugal, Medjugorje, and Italy three times.

Jose was an active leader and a former Lay Director of the Cursillo in Christianity Movement since 1965, a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus since 1968, and an active and dedicated member St Catherine of Siena's parish since 1971. He is a former chairman of the Filipino American Educators Association (FAEAC) and the former president of both the Filipino American Retired United States Armed Forces Association (FARUSAFA) and the Organization of Filipino Educators (OFE) of San Francisco.

Over nearly 60 years of marriage, the couple welcomed six children into their home and set about teaching them to trust God's plan, to pray unceasingly, and to never hold a grudge. His children and grandchildren remember him as a kind, quick-witted father who encouraged them to pursue their goals and to do more than the minimum. Jose will be remembered for his strong faith, his warm smile, his infectious laughter, his passion for golf and wine, and his love for his wife, his family and friends.

My Uncle Joe, my Godfather, was a very special man. I will always remember his warm smile and loving laugh and big hugs. He gave me my first car which I will never forget. He treated everyone so kindly. I would be very blessed if I turn out half the man he was. God bless you Uncle Joe. I will miss you greatly.
