Kenneth Souza Obituary

Kenneth A. Souza

Dec 12, 1943 - Mar 22, 2016

A leader and pioneer in space life sciences, Kenneth A. Souza, 72, of Cupertino, died unexpectedly on March 22. Over a 50-year career at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Souza was a visionary in the advancement of gravitational and space biology as a research scientist, administrator, and mentor. His NASA career started in 1966, conducting one of the center's earliest life science spaceflight experiments on Gemini 11. In 1992, his frog egg experiment on the Space Shuttle Endeavor provided the first evidence that a vertebrate species can reproduce in the absence of gravity.

In addition to his scientific discoveries, Ken provided leadership that led to the establishment of space life sciences as a field of research both nationally and internationally. He was a founding member and past President of the American Society for Gravitational Space Research.

Souza is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Wold Souza; children Adam Souza (Chelsey Piasentin) of San Jose, and Katherine Souza of Cupertino; grandchildren Owen and Bennett Souza; father Walter Souza of Castro Valley; and siblings Cheryl Jungers of Rogers, AR; and Michael Souza of Hayward.

Funeral services and reception will be Saturday, April 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Jude Episcopal Church, 20920 McClellan Road, Cupertino.

During his NASA career, Souza managed many of the nation's most important space and gravitational biology flight research programs. Teams of scientists and engineers led by Souza developed and flew more than 400 life sciences experiments on the Project Gemini, Space Shuttle, Russian Mir, and International Space Station platforms. He also pioneered successful collaborations with scientists in the former Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. Much of what scientists now know about the effects of space flight on living systems was learned in experiments that were conducted under his tutelage.

Born and raised in East Oakland, Souza graduated from Oakland Castlemont High in 1961. He received his AB degree in Bacteriology from UC Berkeley in 1966 and Masters Degree in Microbiology from San Jose State University in 1971.

Souza published more than 100 scientific articles and received a variety of scientific and management awards, including NASA's Exceptional Achievement Medal in 1980 and the Outstanding Leadership Medal in 1991 and 1998. In 1991, he received a scientific achievement award from the Institute of Biomedical Problems, Ministry of Health of the USSR. He was the 2010 recipient of the Jeffries Aerospace and Life Sciences Research Award, awarded by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

Ken was an avid sportsman dating back to his high school baseball career at Castlemont High School in East Oakland in the early 1960's. In later years he shared his passion for skiing, golf, boating and sport fishing with his grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ASGSR, for the Ken Souza Memorial Student Space Flight Program. For info, go to ASGSR.org.

I often think of Ken with fondness. We were schoolmates from Grammar School through High School and friends all the way through. He was very bright, and unassuming and kind. He left too soon, but is fondly remembered.

Ken was one of the brightest in school, but was unassuming and kind to everyone. A really good guy, and he left us too soon.

Just a week before he passed away, Ken and I were in the NASA gym (I called him my Tuesday morning workout buddy, because we saw each other there often). I showed him photos of my kids, and in his characteristic gentle and engaged way he complimented them and I felt like I was the luckiest mom in the world.
All my work and the work of almost everyone in Code SC builds on the foundation that Ken made. We had just started communicating about a project in development, so it's jarring to look in my inbox and see messages from him. I'm lucky I met him and got to know him a little before he died. I hope my small donation to his ASGSR fellowship will help future scientists know a little about the great man who was Ken Souza. Rest in peace.

I was deeply sorry to hear of Ken's passing. I worked with him as a grantee for many years and was always impressed by his candor and advice he provided to our research group. I also worked with Ken on the ASGSB board and appreciated his valuable advice and friendship over the years. He will be truly missed by the Space Biology community and the friends he made along the way.

Shocked and sorry to hear on the passing of Ken Souza, I feel it is not true. Ken was a key player in Life Sciences and he had a deep impact on the science directorate at Ames Research Center and beyond. I feel like an icon is now Legend. I worked with wonderful key players such as Ken Souza, Bonnie Dalton, Tad Savage (RIP), Randy Berthold and Sid Sun. May Ken live on in his family, his science and in the people he touched. My prayers go out to Ken and his family.

I was truly saddened to hear of Ken's death. Twenty six years ago I came to Ames as a temporary assistant buyer in the Space Life Sciences Division for Lockheed Engineering and Sciences Co., and through many contractors and 3 contracts I'm still here. The years spent with Ken's team were some of the happiest, most rewarding of my working life. He treated EVERYONE with respect, kindness, humor, and grace. The fact that he remembered me a good 15 years after I left Lockheed (as a lowly contractor) spoke volumes to me of his character.
I still have a Certificate of Appreciation for the work done on the SLJ-1 mission - and I was looking at it just a few hours before I heard he had died. That's what I mean - Ken considered everyone an equal part of his team, and I appreciated that more than I can say.
I hope you all take some comfort in knowing how much everyone cared for him, and what a truly special human being he was. You all were very lucky to have him in your life.
Very respectfully,
Claudia Blas

I was saddened to hear of Ken's sudden death. He was one of my best bosses when I worked under him on Shuttle, and ISS experiments. He was fair, easy to understand, stayed out of in-house 'politics'. My condolences to his family and to his NASA Ames family as they go through this trying time. My thoughts are with you.
