Lita Smith Obituary

Lita Jane (Tynan) Smith

1928-2016

A woman of strength, courage and determination, Lita Jane was often known for stating, "I'd rather do it myself," and she did just that until her peaceful passing on September 27, 2016 with her family by her side.

The only child of J.J. "Buster" Tynan and Mary Lorraine Tynan, Lita Jane was born in San Francisco and her life was a colorful mosaic of adventures. The love of her life, Justin Peter Smith, Sr. (SI '44) and her son, Justin "Bumper" Smith, Jr. (SFFD) have welcomed her to heaven with open arms and a choir of angels.

Her legacy lives on in her devoted daughter Lorraine (Smith) Scullion, her son-in-law Jim, her daughter-in-law Kathleen (O'Brien) Smith, and her three granddaughters whom she adored; Kendall and Colleen Scullion, and Shannon Smith. She leaves behind an indelible spirit and her family will always remember her zest for life, her fondness of travel, the outings and milestones celebrated together, and her unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Above all, she taught those around her how to live with grace and compassion, no matter what life challenges came her way. Lita Jane was adored and admired by so many and she will forever be remembered by her cheery disposition, her dispensing of life's wisdom, and her signature trademark of fierce independence.

Private interment has been held and a Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 16th at 3PM in the Mary "Be" Mardel, RSCJ Chapel at The Schools of the Sacred Heart, 2222 Broadway, San Francisco. Valet parking provided.

Donations may be made in Lita Jane's memory to: Guide Dogs for the Blind (www.guidedogs.com), Schools of The Sacred Heart (www.sacredsf.org), or a charity of your choice.

Always loved my volunteer stints at the Junior League of SF Shop, managed by the wonderfully fun and funny Lita. Under her long-term management this was the most successful JL shop in the entire country ... something she was very proud of. I have missed her since and will continue to for a very long time.

Lorraine and extended family:

My deepest sympathy along with that of my parents are with you and yours in this most sorrowful time at the loss of your mother, grandmother. May the days, weeks, months and years ahead bring solace to you knowing how much love she had for all of you.

Dear Lorraine and Family,

We are so sorry for your loss. I have such great memories of Lita. I also remember how much my mother loved to see her at the Next to New shop on Filmore Street. The St. Monica connection...still stays strong.

Fondly,
Susan Berryessa & Family
