Loris passed away peacefully on July 19th, 2013 having lost her 7-month battle with Pancreatic Cancer. She is survived by her loving husband, Joel; her daughter Jenn Ryan, son-in-law Timothy Ryan and grandson Noah Ryan of Napa, California; her son Adam Lipski, daughter-in-law Rebecca Woodruff and granddaughter Maya Lipski of San Francisco, California; her sister Hazel Cross brother-in-law Lewellyn Cross of Brooklyn, NY; her brother Audley McLean and sister-in-law Beverley McLean of Ocala, Florida; her brother Roderick Weekes of Brooklyn NY; her sister Pauline Alexander of Freeport, NY; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Loris was born to Ken & Viola Weekes on November 1, 1946 in Kingston, Jamaica where she spent the first five years of her life. She followed her parents to Harlem, New York in 1951 and moved with her family to Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1956 where she grew up. She married her husband Joel on October 17, 1970 and together they moved to San Francisco in 1972 where Loris began a career in teaching and educational program management, including work with Eden Area Regional Occupational Program, San Leandro High School Academy and Seven Tepees After School Program. In collaboration with several friends Loris also co-founded Goat Hill Pizza restaurant on Potrero Hill and served on its Board of Directors until her passing. Following her retirement Loris continued to demonstrate her dedication to helping those in need as a volunteer working with formerly homeless women at Network Ministries, with underpriviledged children in the City's public schools and cooking for homeless adults at St. Martin de Porres House of Hospitality, where a few years ago Loris was honored with a warm embrace from the visiting Dalai Lama. In addition to spending time with her children and grandchildren, Loris particularly enjoyed tending to her rose garden, playing golf, solving puzzles, rooting for the Giants, and cooking for friends and family.
A celebration of Loris' life will be held on Saturday, August 3rd at St. Gregory's Church, 500 De Haro Street, in the City at 10:00 am. Following the memorial service there will be a reception at Goat Hill Pizza, 300 Connecticut Street, a few blocks from the Church. In lieu of flowers, her family would appreciate memorial contributions be made to St. Martin de Porres, 225 Potrero Avenue, SF, 94103.
