February 19, 1960 - October 6, 2015

Resident of Walnut Creek

Mark Stephen Coon, age 55, tragically and unexpectedly passed away on October 6, 2015 in Walnut Creek, California. Born on February 19, 1960 in New Zealand, he lived in England in his early years before moving to the States.

Mark leaves behind his beloved wife, June Bashant, two children (ages 13 and 11), brother Jeremy (Wendy), stepmother (Sherri), mother-in-law Patricia, sister-in-law Dawn (Eric), loving nieces and nephews, and countless friends and colleagues who were blessed to know him. He is predeceased by his father Michael and younger brother Sasha.

Mark was the City Attorney for the City of Concord, California. He received his bachelor's degree from UCLA, then his J.D. from Hastings College of the Law in 1986. He started his legal career at Carroll Burdick & McDonough, then joined Archer McComas & Lageson (now Archer Norris) in 1993, where he met and married his wife. He joined the Concord City Attorney's Office in 2002, where he was later promoted to the position of City Attorney of Concord. While there, he established an "Open Door" Policy with the public and City staff, making himself directly accessible to all.

Always the consummate gentleman, Mark was a gentle spirit with the highest of integrity. He loved his family above all. As an attorney, his clients were grateful for his intellect, legal expertise, graciousness, and kind demeanor. Mark was truly a friend to everyone.

Mark enjoyed backpacking with his friends, swimming, cycling, kayaking, and surfing.

Mark, we were classmates at Lincoln JHS and Samohi. You were so cool, outgoing and kind, and went so far in life.
All of your classmates are still in shock.
Prayers for you and your family.
May God take you into His Mercy and shower you with Love.

Dear Mr. Coon,

I was shocked and saddened to find out about what happened and wanted to express my deepest sympathy to your family. Thank you for your help with those issues we discussed last year. May our Lord keep you safe in His loving care. May the truth come out.

My dearest cousin, my childhood friend and constant companion, you came into our lives and we shared everything, we travelled and lived in 3 countries and my parents loved you as there own, and there are no words that comes close to what you have always meant to me, my Dad, your Godfather "Steve" and Joan the real Mother, but in law your Aunt. Only we as a tight knit little family knew the full story and your untimely end could never reflect those joyous childhood days..

My grief cannot be put into fancy words for the public but I shall always carry such an enormous sense of pride that you indeed touched our hearts during those halcyon days..... Remember Marble Hill Park, our Oak Tree and our roaring days in the green gardens of England. I will love you always.

Dear Mark,

We haven't spoken in years but I was thinking of you recently and decided to look you up online tonight. I was planning to reach out and reconnect. I am so sad to read that you have passed on.

Mark and I met at UC Hasting College of the Law in 1984. I was working in the library and he was a student. We had so much fun together. Mark always had a great sense of humor. He was an excellent writer and a sincere person with such integrity. He cared deeply about his family and friendships. I was so happy for him when he got married.

Mark you will be deeply missed. Although we haven't spoken in many years, our memories together will live on with me forever. You brightened my life and I feel so blessed to have known you. Love, Mary Anne McGill

Mark was an incredibly kind, thoughtful and gentle spirit, who I first met in 1993 when we were associates at the Archer McComas Law Firm, where he later met his wife. I was honored to be their "matchmaker," maid of honor, and guest in their home on countless occasions. Mark adored his wife and kids, and blossomed into the devoted family man that he was. Mark was so bright, so talented, and yet so humble. He took an interest in everyone around him, and was always welcoming and warm. Mark will be forever missed, and never forgotten. Rest in peace, dear friend ....

I met Mark when we both worked at a supermarket in Santa Monica. I remember thinking that he was really nice, smart and had a great sense of humor. We kept in contact through the years and those great traits never left Mark, even as his career soared. I have such happy memories of him! I will miss you Mark Coon.

I met Mark in 1971 at Roosevelt Elementary School in Santa Monica. We shared some carefree times as children. We had only recently reconnected through Facebook. He really was a good guy.

I'm so sorry to learn of this. I remember Mark in law school as thoughtful, inquisitive, modest, and ready to laugh (his eyes crinkling shut). He talked of his worries about Sasha and, for himself. about looking for a solid relationship and family life. I was so happy for him when he became City Attorney, reaching a pinnacle of professional success atter working so hard and as such a solid guy. So so sad...

Mark and I met when we were first year law students at Hastings. Like other first years, we lived in small efficiency units at McAllister Tower, an old and tall building that I still see in the San Francisco skyline when I visit the city. After our last exam of the year, Mark stopped by my room on the 13th floor to celebrate the end of a tough academic year. He was in a great mood, smiling his big smile that made his eyes crinkle on the sides. He opened my window and ceremoniously threw all of his first year notes out the window, and we watched the papers float lightly across the blue San Francisco sky. This is just one of many memories I have of Mark, one of my most cherished friends. I think of it now, because it reflects Mark's fun and carefree spirit. This is what I hope for Mark now - that he surf effortlessly above us in the beautiful Bay area sky, and find peace. I love you, Mark Coon.
