Mark Powers Obituary

Mark James Powers

Mark James Powers was born in Oak Park, Illinois on February 8th, 1970 and he passed away on March 7, 2021 in San Francisco, California. Mark attended St. Emydius and Saint Ignatius High School. At Saint Ignatius, he played baseball, his all-time favorite sport. Additionally, Mark always claimed he introduced rap music to Saint Ignatius High School, one of his proudest accomplishments. Mark later attended San Diego State, before transferring to St. Mary's College where he obtained his Bachelor in Business Administration and a minor in Economics. He also obtained his teaching credentials from San Francisco State University. Mark was passionate about teaching and connecting with his students. Mark loved to run and was proud to have completed several marathons. Mark enjoyed going to Giants games, listening to music, spending time with his many friends, coaching his two kids in basketball, and menacing his family, especially about cleaning. Mark will be dearly missed. Mark is survived by his two children (Isabella Powers and Kameron Powers), his wife (Virginia Powers), his mother (Catherine Powers), his sister (Erin Powers), his brother-in-law, (Brian Prezlock), and his two nieces (Harper and Eve Prezlock). He was preceded in death by his father (Robert Powers) and his brother (Adam Powers). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will not be a funeral service; however, his family will celebrate Mark's life once restrictions allow.

To the Powers family,
Words cant even begin to say the sadness being felt right now. We went to grammar school together and reconnected on fb. I sent him his basketball card from SE and he was so happy and surprised I still had it. Fly high my friend you will be missed.

Mark was a student teacher in my classroom at FS Key elementary many years ago. While it was a challenging placement, I remember his genuine heart and dedication very well. I want his family to know that I have thought about him over the years and am very, very saddened by his passing. I know he loved his family so much- I remember how he spoke about you all with such pride. Please know his life mattered to me.

My deepest condolences to the Powers family. I had the chance to work with Mark at FDR School. He was passionate about his teaching and finding ways to connect with the students; he was always asking advice on how to be an even better teacher and ways to deepen his relationships with the students. We would talk after school often about strategies and techniques to apply in the classroom or just reminisce about old sports stories. I admired his attitude and mindset to become the best he could be. His love of others, life, sports, and family will be missed.

I remember Mark and Adam both as adorable little boys when they lived in Parkmerced. SO sorry to hear he passed away. My sister Joanie used to babysit for them. God bless him and bring comfort to their family.

Mark, you were always a great friend and I’m glad our paths crossed at SBA. I’m glad we kept in touch over the years since you left. Seems like I just got a text from you a few weeks ago.. Miss our late night chats about life and our families. I always remember you bringing me a Diet Coke to school and hanging out in our classrooms. You will be missed.. Lots of love, always
