Matthew Skov Obituary

Matthew Menefee Skov, husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, colleague, friend and the captain and heart and soul of Team Skov. He died January 21st after a valiant five-month battle against a very rare form of cancer. He was 42 years old.
A fifth generation Californian, a native of San Francisco and a proud descendant of Domingo Ghirardelli, Matt was raised in Marin County and was a resident of Corte Madera. A graduate of the Kentfield Schools and Redwood High School, he earned his bachelor's degree from UC Davis, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a graduate of the California Culinary Academy and his love and expertise in the food industry ran the gamut. He was an accomplished chef, manager, restaurant owner, teacher and mentor. At the time of his death, he was in charge of training and facilities for the San Francisco-based non-profit La Cocina, an incubator kitchen dedicated to cultivating low-income food entrepreneurs. He took great personal satisfaction in mentoring and helping others to navigate their way in the food business.
Matt was the adored husband of the love of his life, Christa, whom he married in 1999. He was the devoted father and hero to their daughters, Izzy (10) and Abby (7). The cherished son of Paula and Jeff Skov and the dear brother of Mike, Matt is also survived by his aunt and uncle, many cousins, nieces and nephews, his Bryant in-laws, and a huge and loyal legion of friends and colleagues, many of whom showered him with love and support through the special Team Skov campaign.
A huggable, teddy bear of a guy, Matt was a sweet and gentle soul, known for his warm and caring personality, his booming voice and big smile, his love and appreciation for everyone around him, and his never-ending kindness. He was a lifelong Giants and Forty Niner fan, and in recent years a dedicated follower of Stanford football. Matt was involved in all aspects of his daughters' school and extra curricular activities, from coaching in youth sports and participating in Indian Princesses to attending Daddy/Daughter dances and going on family bike rides.
A celebration of Matt's life will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 3 o'clock at the Mill Valley Community Center, 180 Camino Alto, Mill Valley, CA 94941.
The family suggests memorial contributions in Matt's memory to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Division of Development, 10 Brookline Place 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445 in support of the NUT Midline Carcinoma Research Fund; or to La Cocina, 2948 Folsom St., San Francisco, CA 94110, in support of the Matt Skov Memorial Award, to be given annually to one deserving woman in pursuit of her culinary dreams.

I didn’t know Matthew well but adored his Mom and Dad. His mother and I were classmates at UC Berkeley and sorority sisters. We have remained fast friends. In the ensuing years I have come to appreciate La Cocina and support his efforts there. He is missed but lives on in the lives of his family who support his memory daily. Bonnie

There are no words.....I havn't seen Matt since we graduated from Redwood. We went to Kent Middle School and probably Bacich, though I can't quite remember details that far back. At Kent Middle School, we weren't really friends so I didn't truly get to know him, but I do remember my overall impression of him. He was quiet in his own way but had a core group of buddies he ran with. I remember he was soft-spoken, sweet, polite and didn't tease or hurt others....a gentle person. He really got along with just about everyone and it's too bad our school was so clicky, because I'm sure he would have been a great friend.
I am deeply sorry that he is not with us anymore.
My thoughts are with you all that love him.
Sincerely,
Ginger Allen

Some of the best times of my life were playing baseball with Matt, whether it was wiffle ball, stick ball or little league (team photo included). I was lucky to have a good sport like him ready a willing to play a game with me at a moment's notice. Even when his baseball days were waning as he turn to volleyball, he still met me out front for our never-ending wiffleball games on a field better suited for a lefty like me. He also put up with my endless attempts to throw a nasty Ron Guidry slider. Needless to say, I never would have had the success I did throwing a breaking ball for a strike and just plain playing high school baseball with Matt's patience. Without the success my burning passion for the game might have faded before years of coaching boys teams or covering prep to pro baseball. Thanks Matt, Ryan

PS - I also think I helped him get off to a good start as a chef by helping him win his first pita-pocket stuffing contest. I made the crucial mistake of mixing chocolate syrup with meat and cheese while he went more traditional and tasteful with the salsa thing. Mike was happy to declare him the winner and eat most of his pita, after taking one bite of mine. And Matt just kept on cooking good food.

Matt and I shared a ton of laughs putting out The Redwood Bark together in high school. We had to manually lay out stories on a light table with T-squares (the first Macs were just making their way into the Bark room), and deadline meant "paste-ups" until 1:00 in the morning. The Bark staff was a tight knit crew, and Matt played an integral part in that closeness. His humor, his insight, and his ability to pull a variety of groups together under one common purpose were all inspirational qualities. My deepest sympathy to his family.
