Michael Blumenfeld Obituary

Michael J. Blumenfeld 57, after a short illness, passed away quietly at his home in Oakland on April 29, 2006 surrounded by loving family and friends. Beloved husband of Deborah Reynolds; beloved father of Zoe, Sasha and Ben; beloved brother of Judy Rose, Katherine Blumenfeld; brother-in-law, David Sobel; beloved stepfather of Alexander; and beloved friend, colleague and advocate to the many who knew him both personally and professionally. His loving kindness and wonderful sense of humor will be missed. He made those around him feel important and valued. He was a quiet man but when he spoke it was meaningful and often profound and thought provoking. Compassionate and generous, he shared his zest for life and knowledge with others. Community service was very important to Michael and he could be found many weekends and nights serving meals to the homeless. Michael was a highly respected attorney who practiced law in the East Bay for over 30 years. He helped many of the disenfranchised and forgotten people in our society and was never too busy to give his advice and counsel. He received his undergraduate and master's degree in history from the University of California at Berkeley, spent time in England on a Rhodes scholarship and went on to earn his J.D. degree from Golden Gate University. Family and friends are warmly invited to the Life Celebration for Michael at the Brazilian Room in Tilden Park, Berkeley, CA, on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at 6:00 P.M. (brazilianroom.org for directions).

Michael,

How can you be gone? You were such a vibrant person. I'm in shock, and wish I had had the chance to talk to you one more time.

Michael,

Old friend, former boss and mentor,

Although it has been ten years since I last worked for you, my career would never have amounted to much without the tutelage you provided me at a point in my life where I really needed to grow up and find something I had a passion for.

You provided that spark and impetus for me to take charge. Without your guidance and leadership, I never would have stuck with the legal profession.

Further I'll never forget the evening in 1995 or 1996 I took us to see the band "King Crimson" at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. Although clearly impressed with Adrian Belew and Tony Levin's guitar work, you coined a new term "puerile rock" for their loud soundscapes, a term which I will never forget.

I will always miss your humor, wit and candor.

With love, admiration and respect, Always, your friend and business associate,

Jack & Thomasina Woida
