Michael Mullane Obituary

Michael J. Mullane
Feb. 23, 1943 - June 7, 2020
Mike passed away at home surrounded by his family after a very long battle with cancer. He leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Elaine, daughter Maureen Johansen (Don), son Michael Mullane (Julie), five grandchildren; Jack, Katie, Mary and Madeline Mullane and Andrew Johansen, his brother Dr. James Mullane and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Dolores Mullane and his sister, Mary Meyer.
Born and raised in San Francisco, Mike graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Class of 1961. He loved baseball and in 2014 he was inducted into the Sacred Heart Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1961 Championship Team.
Mike retired in 1995 after a distinguished 30-year career with the SFPD. He spent many years working as an Inspector in the Homicide Detail.
Mike was a man of integrity. He enjoyed golf, playing poker and having lunch with his buddies. He deeply loved his family and they were his priority. You could always find him on the sidelines at his grandchildren's games cheering them on. We miss you Papa and we will love you forever. You were the best!
A special thank you to Dr. Matthew Sirott and staff at Diablo Valley Oncology, John Muir Home Health and American Hospice. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, a private family service will take place. Mike's favorite charity was St. Jude Children's Research Hospital www.stjude.org

Sincere sympathy to Mike’s family and friends. I knew Mike and his best friend Dennis Carlomagno over 60 years ago when he was in high school and attended his wedding. An energetic guy and a good ball player. So many years pass and communication poor especially since I live in Michigan now. I send my deepest regrets regarding Mike’s passing and pray for a cure for Cancer.

To the Mullane Family, I was very sad to hear of Mike's passing. I know he faught that disease valiantly and he did not lose the battle, he just ran out of time. My friendship with Mike goes back to our grammar school days at Holy Name. I remember playing with Mike and the rest of our friends all types of sports in the Holy Name schoolyard. Our families were also very good friends. It was a great time to grow up and a great time for all families. The last time I was able to enjoy Mike's company was a couple of years ago at Westlake Joe's for a small Holy Name reunion. Mike will be a friend in my heart forever.
Sincerely,
Gary Musante

It was my privilege to work with Mike Mullane on the Golden Dragon Massacre investigation and prosecutions when he was a member of the newly-created Gang Task Force of the SFPD and I was the chief prosecutor of those cases. He embodied the finest aspects of police detectives, including but certainly not limited to his unimpeachable integrity. During the three years between the massacre on September 4, 1977 and the sentencing in April of 1980 of the final defendant Tom Yu who had planned it, Mike Mullane and his comrades on the Gang Task Force put extraordinary effort into their brilliant investigation which led to the convictions of those responsible for the massacre, as well as the dismantling of the Joe Boys gang.

I will always consider Mike Mullane truly one of San Francisco's Finest, and convey my condolences to his family

MULLANE Family,
My heartfelt sympathies on your loss.
I remember Mike fondly from the 4th floor of the Hall and golf courses, and the great times at the old Homicide tournaments. RIP
