Peggy Davis Obituary

DAVIS, Peggy Anne - June 18, 1923 - February 2, 2005 Our beloved Peggy Anne died on February 2, 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer this last year. The way she lived and died was an inspiration to all who knew her. Peggy Anne savored books, the theater, classical music concerts, and worldwide travel with her husband Bill. Her last trip was to Paris in October with her daughter Mary and granddaughter Sierra. Her passion for educational experiences is remembered by her grandchildren whom she often brought to museums, shows at the California Shakespeare Festival and countless other cultural activities. Never one to be too predictable, she had her grandson Josh tattoo her upper arm with a queen bee, which she loved to show off to anyone who asked. Her love of reading led to years of volunteering with Berkeley's Friends of the Library and before that with an adult literacy program in Richmond. Her passion to make the world a more peaceful and just place found expression in years of activism with organizations such as the League of Women Voters. She was an early and consistent critic of the war in Vietnam, a generous donor to liberal and humanitarian organizations, and was appalled by the U.S. occupation of Iraq and the current administration's domestic policies. But her large family and even larger circle of friends was always at the center of her life and always her greatest satisfaction. She will be remembered by all of us for her brilliant smile, vibrant conversation and great food at her many dinner parties, her quirky sense of humor, loyalty, wit, and feisty high spirits. She befriended all and was ceaselessly and genuinely interested in everyone's story. She will be sorely missed by her husband William Davis, her daughter Mary Visher, her two sons, Bill and David Visher; her three stepdaughters Claudia Berger, Laura Riggs, and Sarah Davis, her stepson Andy Davis, her brother David Stein, and her thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on February 20th at the Northbrae Community Church at 941 The Alameda in Berkeley. Instead of sending flowers, please make a donation in her name to either Doctors Without Borders www.doctorswithoutborders-usa.org or Berkeley's Friends of the Library berkeleypubliclibrary.org/ support/ friends.html.
